5.0 out of 5 stars Francs Bacon Fan, 22 Sep 2008
By
This review is from: Bacon's Arena - The Definitive Francis Bacon Story [2005] [DVD] (DVD)
I remember this first being broadcast in 2005 and sadly only managed to record the last 30 minutes or so. Thankfully though, through Amazon, I was thrilled to hear that the documentary was being released on DVD and have to say that I'm very happy with the results given. The complete, original Arena film is there lasting around 90 minutes and to add to this is a handful of smaller films based around Francis' life. A great one being on his Reece Mews studio in South Kensington.

If you like Francis Bacon, you'll be pleased with this purchase, a very slick produced product. A bargain too, especially at just under 13! Get the DVD and then go and visit the current exhibition! You won't be disappointed.

Whether you are a fan or not (and you definitely will be after watching it!), this is an amazing study of the artist. The film is carefully considered and concise, and accompanied by a beautifully haunting score. It really shows you what a weird and wonderful man Bacon was. And the extra features are great too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Second best Bacon doc!, 23 Dec 2011
This review is from: Bacon's Arena - The Definitive Francis Bacon Story [2005] [DVD] (DVD)
This dvd is great for any Bacon fan, new or old.. It covers Bacon from his early days in Ireland and Berlin until his final moments in Spain. Many friends of Bacon give their take on his world. It's great to hear John Edwards and Brian Clarke tell us of their times with Francis. There are also some great extras, including a short film on Reece Mews, Bacons studio in South Ken. Even now some twenty years on after his death, I believe there is still room for atleast one more great study of Bacon on DVD. As an artist myself [...] I find this to be great inspiration. Buy this, it's worth it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful but bullfighting sequences very distressing, 8 Oct 2008
This review is from: Bacon's Arena - The Definitive Francis Bacon Story [2005] [DVD] (DVD)
Wonderful and insightful look at Francis Bacon artist and person. I would point out however there are some distressing bullfighting sequences during the main documentary that are unpleasant and objectionable. It is within the context of Bacon as an artist and man, but I don't really want to watch animals being tortured and killed on a DVD and feel others may share that viewpoint or at least should be aware such content is there.

BECAUSE OF THE INDIFFERENCE OF THE UNIVERSE TOWARD BACONIAN MAN AND ITS FUTILE AND PREPOSTEROUS WRANGLE,IT IS OF NO CONSEQUENCE WHETHER WE ARE WELL ADJUSTED GOVERNMENT ANDROIDS OR WILD INDEPENDENT FORCES.AT A FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL WE EXPERIENCE OUR INTIMATE PERCEPTION OF REALITY.OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE OUTER WORLD FILTERED VIA OUR INNER WORLD.THIS MAY BE ABSOLUTE.
I FEEL A PERPETUAL COMPULSION TO RECORD,IN IMAGES,THE ECLECTIC ELASTICITY OF THE MOMENT WITH MY EXISTENCE AS A PHYSICALLY FINITE,EMOTIONALLY ETERNAL STRAND OF RUBBERISATION.
STRETCHING,TWISTING,WEAVING & WARPING THROUGH AND AROUND MY INNER SPACE.
MY IMAGES ARE ALSO A POWERFUL REJECTION OF THE INCULCATORY RHETORIC PROPOUNDED BY THE VARIOUS INCUBUS AND SUCCUBUS MARIONETTES,DISPLAYED BY THE INTERNATIONAL BANKING CARTEL.
THIS IS A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD MACHINE AND HOW WE ALL CONTRIBUTE TO THE GREASING OF ITS COGS WITH OUR PUTRID IGNORANCE AND FILTHY BLOOD.
ONE CAN SAY THAT THIS IS NO MORE PROFOUND THAN AN OPROBRIAL CONDEMNATION.
BUT IT IS INCONTRAVERTIBILITY INCARNATE THAT SEMANTICAL SCIENCES ARE AT PLAY WITH THE WORDS `HORROR` AND `JOY`.
THEY SERVE NO SIGNIFICANT PURPOSE OTHER THAN THE DECORATIVE.MY DESIRE YOU MAY SAY IS A HISTRIONICAL BURDEN IN THE AESTHETIC SENSE WHICH CAN BE VIEWED AS ANOTHER INANITY.FOR THE GUTTER OF ONES MIND IS THE ONLY REALLY COMFORTABLE PLACE TO BE WHEN IN THE DARK.
ANOTHER SALIENT POINT FOR CONSIDERATION IS THAT I HAVE INCURRED A REMARKABLE AMOUNT OF ACRID COMPUNCTION THAT NOURISHES THE `HUNCHBACK`,TO QUOTE STEPHEN G.MICHAUD & HUGH AYNESWORTH.
ARTICULATELY I AM REASONABLY VAINGLORIOUS TO MY IMMEDIATE PEERS,& EVEN THOUGH MY ART IS WORTHLESS IN THE COMMERCIAL SENSE I PERPETUALLY OBSESS OVER THE INCALCULABLE INTRICACIES OF THE ENIGMATIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE IMAGE.
TRANSMUTATIONAL SUBLIMATION.
I AM CONSTANTLY TORN TO SHREDS BY LOVE,ENVY AND OBSESSIVE FOCUS.
IN SUMMATION,IN A BACON UNIVERSE,AN EXPOSED CORPSE RAPIDLY DISINTEGRATES,AND AS A METAPHYSICAL ILLUMINATIONARY THANKYOU FRANCIS BACON FOR YOUR PAINTINGS.XXX
