3.0 out of 5 stars The Good ,the Bad and the problem.
For the first time in this Mahler - Abbado series I have to register a complaint. The orchestra plays magnificently throughout and as a listening experience this would be blissfully enjoyable. Alas ! The behaviour of a few members of the woodwinds make it an embarrassment instead., The 1st. oboe player is the main offender. He seems incapable of playing a single note...

This review is from: Mahler Symphony No. 3 (Lucerne Festival Orchestra/Claudio Abbado) [DVD] [2008] [NTSC] (DVD)
Abbado has the enviable reputation of being one of the world's finest Mahler conductors. This has been further reinforced by his set of performances held at Lucerne with his hand-picked orchestra constituting the Lucerne Festival orchestra. This very large orchestra, apart from containing musicians of outstanding individual abilities, also lays great stress upon their empathy and experience with the world of chamber music. Thus is achieved the unusual combination of orchestral size allied to individual and corporate sensitivity. This suits Abbado's particular vision of Mahler.

In this symphony all these elements come together wonderfully well. The symphony itself is written on a particularly large scale and is in 6 movements, two of which add voices to the orchestral mix. The theme of the symphony is also vast as it contemplates Mahler's view of creation progressing from the `origins of all life' to his view of divinity via `the world of plants ... the animal kingdom ... the world of humans ... the world of angels' as the subject matter of the six movements. (Quotes are from the sleeve notes).

The sound world that Abbado achieves throughout this performance is typified by the final long climax of the work. This maintains an extraordinary translucency of texture as the peak slowly comes into view and is achieved. At no point do the added textures of instrumental colouring obscure anything that is currently present nor do they go on to dominate anything that is yet to be attained. As such this is a perfect example of the whole as a microcosm.

The generously spacious layout of the orchestra and choir allows the camera work to achieve equivalent sensitivity of detail as well as panoramic effect. The surround and stereo sound captures all of this with admirable lucidity.

In my opinion this is a clear contender for the full 5 stars and should give much pleasure and satisfaction to all purchasers of the recording.

Some dialogue from the comments section that may offer further help:

I thought that you might like to know that before I buy a recording I now look through all the reviews to see if you have posted one. Your assessments and opinions are invaluable. Thank you. (US review)

I particularly like your format of review. They give the prospective purchaser an idea of the style of the playing and relevant comparisons. They are succinct. Keep up the good work! (UK review)

I'm sure there are many other serious collectors, besides myself, who wait for your synopsis and opinion before spending their hard-earned money on new releases...
Keep up the good work!
Thank you (UK review)

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant achievement., 26 Feb 2014

This review is from: Mahler Symphony No. 3 (Lucerne Festival Orchestra/Claudio Abbado) [DVD] [2008] [NTSC] (DVD)
Mahler's 3rd is revealed in this performance as a masterpiece - a symphony I had previously overlooked in preference to the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 9th. A difficult work to hold together but under the guidance of Abbado this work, for me, takes its place among the greats of the symphonic canon. I love watching orchestras play and the concentration of this orchestra, with such distinguished players and soloists, I found totally absorbing. (The advent of DVDs of concert performances is a big plus as far as I am concerned)

The whole thing is beautifully filmed and recorded and the triumphant conclusion awe-inspiring. No wonder there was total silence at the end before the audience felt able to applaud.

Claudio Abbado's death is a sad loss to the musical world. One wonders who can possibly replace him. Luckily we have his distinguished recorded legacy. The films of his miraculous performances with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra will be a lasting testimony to a wonderful musician in action.

It's marvellous - a wonderful symphony, impeccably played by this orchestra of all-stars, directed with great sensitivity by Abbado. And beautifully filmed. I saw this orchestra with the same conductor performing this work at the Proms within a few days of the recording of this DVD, and it is one of the most memorable experiences of my life - now I can relive it.

He seems incapable of playing a single note without lunging forwards or the reverse and the 1st flute is nearly as bad. Others have mild attacks of this disease as well.l In the concert hall this may not be a problem - distance would lessen the impact, but on the recording every solo gets a "close up" and the result is very annoying.(I can imagine Sir Thomas' faced with this behaviour " Mr----, please save your calisthenics for home" ) If this isn't bad enough then just wait until the contralto gets going. She seems to think that every phrase of the song needs facial interpretation and the result is both extremely funny or squirm producing - or both. Great performance - but only for the visually impaired or the very tolerant.

5.0 out of 5 stars mahler 3 dvd, 17 Feb 2012
This review is from: Mahler Symphony No. 3 (Lucerne Festival Orchestra/Claudio Abbado) [DVD] [2008] [NTSC] (DVD)
I have all the Mahler symphonies on cd and listened to them frequently over many years. Then with the advent of dvd recorders, started recording them on dvd via the Panasonic recorder. I got them all from the proms or other concerts except no.3 which had not appeared on tv, unless I missed it! I watched all the snippets on Youtube and this version appealed to me. I have only played it twice but have been very impressed and the quality is far superior to those I have home recorded.
