3.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware
A good low budget collection, but please note that most of the 4 or 5 star reviews on this page are NOT for this collection, they are for the far more expensive Cul de Sac / Repulsion / Knife in the Water Polanski collection. Amazon, this needs your attention.

Chinatown, is supremely evocative of America in its golden past, hoodlums, classic cars, fedoras etc., a great soundtrack and Jack Nicholson being able to give his best as the private eye. The tenant, is very different, with Polanski in the lead role. Haunting and with that edge of fear, so many films today cannot match. Good collection, nicely packaged and well priced.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 for the films, 3 for the package, 18 Aug 2004

As a collection of films for the purist Polanskiphile, this could only be surpassed through the inclusion of Repulsion to represent the director's peak achievements. Not that Polanski appeals to everyone, but his capacity for unnerving his audience is superbly represented by Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant and Chinatown. No director before or since has been able to get under the skin to greater effect. Each of these films are artful gems, different but equally effective in their own subtle ways.
However, as a package, this is somewhat lacking. Other than trailers, there are no extras, not even a documentary on the strange life and bizarre habits of Poland's finest and most charismatic film director (along with Kieslowski, perhaps), a life fit for one of his own film treatments. True, the films are presented in widescreen format and in excellent prints with high sound quality, but this was an opportunity missed to conduct a retrospective on the man as well as his output.
For the films alone, 5 stars are thoroughly merited. For the DVD package 3 stars. Overall, 4 seems fair - watch for the films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roman Polanski Collection, 20 July 2010
This review is from: Rosemary's Baby/The Tenant/Chinatown [DVD] (DVD)
All three films are natural classics. 'Rosemary's Baby' being the best of three. Set in the very New York apartment building, that John Lennon was murdered in, provides a chilling backdrop to this gothic horror. Proving you do not have to have blood and gore to make a classic horror movie. 'China Town' is another classic, starring Jack Nicholson as a private investigator, and Faye Dunaway as a socialite. Transporting you back to the late thirties LA, this is a Polanski film with a difference. He does in fact turn up as the knifeman, in a cameo. The 'The Tenant' is about a shy Polish clerk, played by Roman Polanski, who works in a Paris office. He moves into an apartment, that the last tenant, a lady, tried to commit suicide from the bedroom window. The plot, you could say is very similar, to his earlier film, 'Repulsion', instead of French woman in London, insert Polish man in Paris. One thing that mars this enjoyable film, is the fact, nearly every person seems to have an American accent, other than that, a very strange, classic Polanski film. Have your self a ball, enjoy. Try 'Repulsion' and 'Cul-de-Sac', both made in England, London and Holy Island respectively.

This Roman Polanski box set is fantastic. It covers a period of time when Polanski, as well as film-making in general, was experiencing a bit of a renaissance. Rosemary's Baby is a subtley terrifying account of the occult in Manhattan. The Tenant is a deeply sinister tale of an outsider's paranoid waking-nightmare. Chinatown is a haunting and ambiguous crime thriller. All three films benefit from being given great quality widescreen prints. There's not much in the way of extras but, of note, is an old documentary about Rosemary's Baby where Mia Farrow sounds out of her head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous collection, 22 Dec 2013

I bought this mainly for Chinatown which is an excellent film, and the added bonus was Rosemary's Baby which I still love after all these years. The Tenant begins a little slowly but is worth watching for the terribly psychological climax!

It is a great collection of Polanski's movies. If you buy it for someone who has no idea of his work, this will serve as a great introduction.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Polanski, 1 April 2005
This box set is excellent value for money, and it contains some great films, which I have rated individually:
-Rosemary's Baby (8/10)
-The Tenant (6/10)
-Chinatown (7/10)
The first film, 'Rosemary's Baby' is my favourite. It is such a strange story, beautifully acted by the main character Mia Farrow. It is beautifully directed, is exciting and shocking, and deserves repeated viewing.
'The Tenant' is not quite as good. The first part of the film is excellent-Polanski himself gives a great performance, but it becomes too melodramatic and bizarre.
'Chinatown' has often been labelled his masterpiece, although I think this is 'Repulsion'. Jack Nicholson is excellent, and the story is well told, and in the end, extremely moving. I found it to be very similar to 'LA Confidential.
I though the extras were quite good. I liked the interviews with the film makers, and particularly enjoyed the documentary starring Mia Farrow. As an overall package it is excellent value for money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpieces, 26 Nov 2010
This review is from: Rosemary's Baby/The Tenant/Chinatown [DVD] (DVD)
This is an excellent box set and well worth buying.
In all three films polanski layers on suspense masterfully and the cast and acting is brilliant.
Rosmarys baby is arguably the best horror film ever made and Chinatown is arguably the best detective film ever made.
The tenant is shocking and morbid with polanskis dark sense of humour often lurking in the shadows its also a great film in its own right
