5.0 out of 5 stars sleazy euro-trash fun., 25 Dec. 2008

This review is from: Last House on the Beach [DVD] [1978] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
After the success of wes craven's controversial last house on the left it was inevitable that sooner or later the italian film industry would be looking to produce knock-offs to cash in, this film is clearly one of those (check out the title!!!_)
. Ray (living dead at the manchester mourge) lovelock plays one of a gang of bank robbers who hole up in a house full of young college girls and a nun who is there to keep an eye on the girls, predictably as in most last house knock off's things start getting nasty with plenty of rape and violence. One exceptionally distateful bit presents a slow motion rape sequence,so anyone with enough taste will probably want to avoid this film at all costs (and deduct four stars from the review).
Hardcore fans of spaghetti horror from the 70's will probably enjoy this however, as distasteful as the film is (very!), it is admittedly well shot for the most part, from the director of that other notorious italian shock-fest mondo cane, the soundtrack is pretty good and severin's disc presents the film in supurb quality for both picture, colour and sound. Previosly only available on japanese laser-disc, this a worthy purchase for euro-horror fans's; will probably offend the hell out of most other people though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad Habit., 11 Sept. 2013

Three Italian roustabouts decide to rob a bank, and in true Italian bank job fashion, it results in several innocent people in the banking hall being gunned down and beaten. So the gang scarper with the loot and look for somewhere to lie low before the cops catch them. Whereby, they come across a remote house at random and decide that it's as good a place as any to use as a hide out, so they ditch the car and stake out the house..
Inside they find a bunch of teenage girls, who, as they soon discover, are under the watchful eye and instruction of their tutor, a laid back nun, called Sister Cristina.
The thieves quickly bully their way into control of the situation, however it's not long (about 45 seconds!) before the control slips, one of the girls is man handled and chaos and hysteria run rampant about the house, resulting in one of the intruders being stabbed with a spiky handled comb; leading to violence, rape, violent rape and rapey violence...

Lovelock plays the cool gang leader and looks great, with quite a subdued performance, given the subject matter. With the always welcome (I have a thing for her!) Florinda Bolkan playing Sister Cristina, the nun with a past, that tries to keep her head, and her girl's heads from harm, until of course it gets near the 90 minute mark and Bolkan knows it's time to bite back!!
The rest of the cast are game enough, considering the exploitative nature of the story, although there's no way the girls in this are teenagers, as their bedrooms are just too damn tidy! Of course nobody wears bras, resulting in a hefty sleazetastic rape count, in which amongst others, one girl is luridly raped in slow motion and another, so badly abused in her front bottom, with a stick, she dies from it!
At one point, the bad guys demand to have the girls cook them a roast dinner and when they ask if there's any wine on the premises, Bolkan replies that they keep a 'couple' of bottles in the top cupboard 'for celebrations', only to then open said cupboard to reveal the film crew must have been storing all their J&B in there! Yay!
As I've said, although fairly gratuitous and unpleasant, LHOTB isn't completely without merits and even if we discount the sheer nastiness and fun on offer, and the very cool lead performers, the director Prosperi also does a decent job with some nice little touches, and an excellent score, consisting of a deep bass, funky, electro prog rock synth score.

Without a doubt this will offend many viewers unattuned to this kind of trash, but if you like the rape revenge/home invasion sub genre that sprang off the back of Last House on the Left in the 70s, then you can do much worse than this, and I would certainly recommend it to lovers of this nasty but dated sub~genre, and happily place it up there with the likes of:
House on the Edge of the Park, Death Game, Night Train Murders, Hitchhike, The Penthouse and Death Weekend

I first saw this over a decade ago on a double bill with In a Glass Cage! So you can imagine what sort of afternoon that was!
The Severin print on offer looks really nice and has a few extras, the pick of which being a short documentary reflection of the film with interviews.

4.5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Italian sleaze in the vein of Last House on the Left, 6 Sept. 2009

I know what you're all thinking, oh no not another last house rip-off! Well it is a little bit but the movie is so much more than that. Three crooks who just robbed a bank are looking for a place to lay low for a few days and find a nice big house by the beach, there are a few problems though, namely half a dozen young women, soon the women are held at gunpoint and the crooks intend to stay a few days, as the cruelty of these robbers begins to show and various violent acts are commited its up to the women to fight for their lives. Fans of Italian films like "Night Train Murders" and "House on the Edge of the Park" will love this gritty film.

sounds like one those post futuristic titles set after some World catastrophe. It is a very Bushish tale of "...un-American behaviour". Brutal not for the timid.
