4.0 out of 5 stars not really horror but ok.
this nice little boxset from fox consists of three very different movies, the first "chandu the magican"(1932) is more like an old saturday morning serial than a horror movie.Starring edmund lowe(chandu) and bela lugosi(roxor)it revolves around the stealing of a death-ray device,by roxor, and the attempt to recover it by our hero, chandu. With some very good special...

1.0 out of 5 stars Haven't been able to watch it as it's in an American format
OK, this is probably my fault for not having read the information carefully enough before I bought it, but in a Christmas present buying rush I got this for my brother-in-law and then found out that, unfortunately, he had not been able to enjoy his gift. Pretty embarrassing!

this nice little boxset from fox consists of three very different movies, the first "chandu the magican"(1932) is more like an old saturday morning serial than a horror movie.Starring edmund lowe(chandu) and bela lugosi(roxor)it revolves around the stealing of a death-ray device,by roxor, and the attempt to recover it by our hero, chandu. With some very good special effects, for 1932 that is,it is not very horrific in any sense of the word.It is accompanied by a commentary track and a 15min featurette and the talking heads seem to have been watching a different movie from me as i thought it was rather slow and apart from the ending nothing to write home about.2/5.The second movie "dr renaults secret"(1942) was a lot more like the old universal horror movies and without giving too much away has a mad scientist and a deformed assistant(george zucco and j.carrol naish) with the titular secret being very interesting. This also has a 15min featurette but no commentary,it would have been better to put one here than on chandu,i would give this movie 3.5/5.The final movie is"dragonwyck"(1946) starring vincent price, gene tierney and walter huston .Its a movie that seems to try and be another rebecca but cant match the brilliance of hitchcock and olivier ."Dragonwyck" is the name of the house that a young girl goes to to try and improve herself and eventually marries the master of the house with shocking consequences.Look out for a young jessica tandy and also harry morgan(mash). This movie comes with a commentary and featurette and also 2 radio adaptions and an isolated music track. 3/5.I would give the movies 3 stars and add 1 for the extras.Very reasonably priced and each movie has its own slimline case and also an eight page booklet covering all three movies.

Living in the UK (where it is almost impossible to view vintage films on TV now) it was a pleasure to acquire these 3 rarely seen tiles and in such gorgeous prints. Dr Renault's Secret as completely new to me and a delightful surprise (but anything with George Zucco is welcome). Good extras and attractive packaging completed the deal and all at a very affordable price. Recommended!

Not much to say other than the picture quality is good, and we were only really interested in this set for Dragonwyck - as such it's great value as Dragonwyck on its' own is usually double the cost of this collection !

This set also includes the radio version of Dragonwyck which we enjoyed.
