We bought this item to go with our 42" plasma as we found the tv sound would vary so much between analogue, sat and dvd, and the sound was very flat and dialogue could swallowed up by background music.

The yamaha sound projector has been a revelation. If you have equipment with HDMI outputs they can be routed through the unit. Just plug them in, press the appropriate button on the handset (TV, SAT, DVD and AUX etc) and switch your tv to the channel used for HDMI connections or if you do not have hdmi there are two composite connections. One unexpected bonus was that we no longer experience the HDCP problems we had encountered previously which is great.

Very easy to set up and to use. Can certainly hear all the dialogue we previously missed and sound does appear to come at you from all directions. We can now hear every word of the dialogue.

Our lounge is about 15ft square and this system works very well, certainly a lot better than having speakers and cables trailing all over the place and having had a 5.1 home cinema system in the past I would say that this compares very well. Especially good if you are watching in HD as the sound really comes alive.

I expect purists would say it is no where as good as a fully fledged 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, however, we are more than pleased with it and it has enhanced our tv viewing. We have connected it up to our Sky HD box and to a samsung h1080 dvd player which upgrades dvds to full HD. As a whole this has made watching dvds a pleasure and will certainly be rewatching a lot of them.

Really great, clever bit of kit. Once set up correctly, the surround effect really is brilliant from the numerous speakers bouncing off the walls. Very loud, lots of bass, customisable sounds, decent selection of inputs/outputs including HDMI for high quality sound. With the press of a button you can localise the sound to one part of a big room, so you don't annoy other people. Can even adapt to different surfaces, so if you have curtains on one wall the sound will still bounce off it.
Only thing is it really needs to be near the middle of the wall to work best, as I found in a corner the surround doesn't work too well, and I'd imagine in a non-rectangular room it might not be so great. Also looks a bit 'boxy' compared to the new slimline versions, but then again is a lot cheaper. Does it compare to a 'proper' surround set up? Yep, but only if set up just right (with the aid of the colossal manual), and gets extra points for not having cables strewn all over the room.

From all the instructions for set up in the box, this is ideally suited for a room where you can place this centrally and bounce the sound off of all the walls without furniture interference. Probably works well in a square room but in an odd shaped room like mine it is ok but not great. Definite improvement on the sound from the TV but nowhere near as good as I was expecting from all the other comments on this page.

This soundbar is a superb upgrade to standard set up found on most lcd sets of today, clear and crisp sound that projects forward and not tinny noise bounced of the rear of the tv. I would purchase the optional subwoofer (about £100) but as i live in a terraced property I'll stick with improved sound, and leave the thumping base for now. Overall very happy with purchase, though obviously if you want true surround sound look else where, and possibly the higher priced yamaha soundbars? Paired with Sony Bravia KDL-40NX503 which operates the soundbar volume and switches on and off with sony remote (nice touch) though all advanced features still need the yamaha remote. Highly recommended so long as you are not a complete TV nut and looking for the be all and end all while watching loud action movies! Would buy again

I have used this for over a year and have just taken the courage to call it a bad buy and replace it with a conventional system. In a room like ours where you view across the narrow part and the two sides are about 16m each side of centre it just does not produce anything other than sound straight in front of you. We have just opted for the Logitec Z906 5.1 surround system which to all intents and purposes does the job properly. We also bought the YST-FSW050 woofer unit. That works quite well for £75, but only if you can use the Soundbar and benefit from it. My advice is don't try to be too clever and try to be "speakerless" it doesn't really work. Mine's going on Ebay. Incidentally the Logitec is cheaper.

This is an excellent product which does ALL that it says it does. Why have speakers around the room when you can have this.? I would recommend it to anyone.

The one thing which prevents me giving it 5 stars is the absence of a radio tuner, which would not have been too much to ask for at this price.
This unit is particularly good for anyone who often plays DVDs of opera as these do not have lots of special effects so there is not a lot of point in going for a full 5 speaker setup; it reproduces the orchestra and singers well and gives a feeling of the ambience of the opera house or concert hall. But it is not a miracle worker so older recordings will still be prone to sounding less than perfect and may require a lot of fine tuning to get acceptable results from.
To sum up: the unit is indeed good (but not spectacularly so), and fits neatly under my tv with no visible wires. But it does raise the question as to why we should be required to go to these lengths and extra expense just to get decent sound. Is it really not possible for the manufacturer to build all the necessary de-coding gubbins for 5 track sound into the tv and to equip them with better speakers and provide loudspeaker outputs on the back of the tv so that those who are still not satisfied can add external speakers?

As with previous reviewers, I was after purchasing a speaker product that would give good quality sound, without the need for loads of separate speaker units and trailing cables. This is not surround sound, but does give a great depth of sound and provides several different settings and modes. It is also relatively straightforward to set up.
