The renaissance of the New Orleans Soul Queen continues with this uplifting, moving album. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Irma's house was destroyed and she was presumed dead. Thankfully she made it through and has come back stronger than ever with 2006's After The Rain and now the aptly titled Simply Grand. It's a simple concept - Irma's majestic voice is backed by a series of pianists on some wonderful songs. Standards such as 'I Think Its Going To Rain Today' and 'This Bitter Earth' sit easily alongside new songs like Bacharach's 'What Can I Do' and the overall effect is an appreciation of an indomitable lady and an indestructible city.
