5.0 out of 5 stars Horror-Who at it's best, thrilling stuff!
Barcode: 5014503181628

From the opening shots of Karn, eerily dark and swathed in thick swirling fog, you know you're in for a real classic hiding behind-sofa-ride with this serial. In the very first episode you get a gruesome beheading, a crippled servant with a hook for an arm, later delights coming in the form of a brain in a jar of green goo, the Doctor...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Overrated
The reference to Frankenstein is obvious and isn't a problem because the set designs are good and Tom Baker's performance is top notch however for me what let's this down fully is the lack of motivation behind Solon and the character of Morbius himself. For someone supposed to be so evil, Morbius feels rather bland and he and the Doctor don't have the meaty confrontations...

I grew up with Tom Baker as 'My' doctor. (Yes I hid behind the arm of the sofa when the daleks were on!) This is one of the classic Tom Baker stories. Its a reworking of the Frankenstein story by Mary Shelley but done as only Dr Who can do it! Must buy for your collection. (Look for the recent BBC Dr Who novel Warmonger if you want to know how Morbius ends up in the situation he does in this story. It's a good read!)

Remembered this from childhood and it is still scary. Those nights behind the sofa have come back again. Bring it on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting the best use out of the brain, 10 July 2008

First broadcast in late Janaury 1976, The Brain Of Morbius is one of the best remembered stories from the early years of the Tom Baker era. As with many serials from this period, The Brain of Morbius is influenced by a famous horror story, in this case Frankenstein . The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith crash land on a barren and bleak planet near Gallifrey, called Kahn. Also on this planet are a group of females called The Sisterhood and a mad scientist complete with a castle, called Solon. The original scripts submitted by the established writer Terence Dicks, were radically altered by script editor Robert Holmes to fit the new gothic regime under producer Philip Hinchcliffe. This resulted in Terence asking for the story not to be broadcast under his own name. When Robert Holmes asked Terence what name he would like to be used, Terence replied 'use some bland name". Holmes did just that and a few months later Dicks saw in The Radio Times, The Brain of Morbius by Robin Bland. By this stage Terence laughed at the joke.
This is certainly a DVD worth watching. Guest actor Philip Madoc is superb as Solon. I also have only seen the edited version of this story that was released on video in the mid 80s, so it will be nice to final see the full 90 minute version.
