4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable thriller and excellent performances
I enjoyed this thriller with its neo-noir look ( very evocative of Manhattan) and its excellent casting and performances. The plot is credible, even if some of the twists are probably a little too easy to project. But the buildup is tension-filled and the resolution is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the profession of the main protagonist ( certainly a made-in-accountant heaven...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best
In many areas, Deception is a bit of a disappointment. The script is poor, enough so that the top quality actors struggle a little with some of the cheese, the plot twists are a little too obvious and occasionally slapdash, and I left watching the film feeling that the full potential for the film itself hadn't been reached. Half of the problems seem to be caused by a lack...

4.0 out of 5 stars Well balanced. But not in the way one might expect..., 24 Dec 2010
This review is from: Deception [DVD] (DVD)
Well balanced picture. Great first half and awkward second. It started out well. Swap of mobiles lets Jonathan, the unaware and sullen looking accountant - Ewan McGregor - in on a world of 'sex, drugs and rock and roll'. Before long he's persuiing his new lifestyle with great verve. With horrendous consequences. It's the start of the consequences which herald the said awkward half of 'Deception'. So, we have the superb built-up of plot, up to the point where Jonathan gets icecubes from a machine in a hotel corridor. On return to his rented lovenest, where he expects to find girlfriend 'S' - Michelle Williams - eagerly awaiting his rather limpy body. From this point on, 'Deception' spiralles down to an incoherent roller coaster ride from Manhattan to Madrid, with personality swaps, shoot-outs and carchases thrown in. With all the hold-ups out of the way, 'S' and Jonathan get together in a Madrid square and walk off into the sunset. One loose end though; there's still two suitcases stuffed with millions of dollars near a park bench now, isn't there? Ah well, finders keepers and all that. 4 stars to the actors. Great performances by all, especially by Ewan McGregor. He's one of my favourites. There's hardly anyone as versatile an actor as he is. I bought this dvd because of Ewan, because of an intriguing capture on the cover and because it had been heavily reduced ;-)

Another Ewan flop...

The Deception is totally uninspired. If you can't guess the 'twist' you must be too dumb to push the buttons on your dvd player. That bloke from Star Wars does another dodgy American accent and plays, again, the nervous nerd who can't believe his luck, but ultimately gets the girl. That bloke from X-men does a sub-American psycho thing which is just about believable. But it's just another shadows and neon no hoper with some nice lingerie and a daft ending.
