5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime meditative chant, 9 July 2009

This review is from: Byzantine Chant: Sister Marie Keyrouz (Audio CD)
Simple line melodies creating a clear and velvety meditative sound like a rising of the voice in a prayer to God, very similar in feeling to the early medieval chants of Hildegard von Bingen. On first hearing these works are a shock, because of their drone-like character; the melodies are not beautiful in themselves but after a few minutes they take you into a state of prayer in meditative calmness. The words sung in Arabic and Greek,(libretto texts in French, English and German but not the sung language) deal with recognition of sin, our love of debauchery and our cleaving to iniquity, asking for God's forgiveness, receiving God's mercy and love in purification and final redemption and resurrection with Christ at Easter - like St. John's "Dark Night of the Soul" in music moving towards heaven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 21 July 2000

I cannot add to any of the superlatives which have already been used elsewhere to describe Sister Marie Keyrouz' work. Her Greek and Arabic vocal ornamentation underscored by the Byzantine 'ison' bass and basso profundo monotone is the perfect combination.
Minor complaint - would have been nice to have the Greek and Arabic lyrics with the documentation rather than just the translations.
Also look for Keyrouz' "Sacred Melchite Chant" and "Tranditional Maronite Chant" CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious music, 17 Jan 2008
By
Aquinas "summa" (celestial heights, UK) - See all my reviews
This is ethereal music and gloruiously sung by Sr Keyrouz; the resurrection becomes almost tangible as if one is transported to Palestine on that beautiful Easter Morn when man became transfigured in Christ.
