Great for dad's
on 19 November 2008
I am by no means a classial music buff (Metallica is my thing) but I do like a good war film and hence, a film tune to go with it. The beauty of this type of 'best of' collection is that you don't have to be a classical music fan to enjoy this package. Most of the theme tunes here are well known to all and are performed to a high standard (to my ear) by the City of Prague Orchestra.
This kicks off (pardon the pun) with 'The Great Escape', a tune the whole nation can whistle, a fantastic way to grab your attention. 'Dambusters', '633 Squadron', 'Guns of Navarone' and my personal fave 'Battle of Britain- Luftwaffe March' (how come the Germans get the best music in that film?) feature on CD1.
CD2 gives us 'Saving Private Ryan', 'Band of Brothers', 'Empire of The Sun' and 'Bridge At Remagen' to name but a few. Each one played, as mentioned, to a very high standard.
Included is a booklet giving each piece a brief description and the odd bit of interesting trivia, such as... 'John Williams wrote the music for Midway. His next job was Star Wars- you can hear similarities'
I have played and played both CD's, enjoying what I hear, which is helped by knowing the movies and music related to them. I would imagine this is a great gift for dad's who may not be mad on classical music but enjoy a war film or two.
This is ideal as a Christmas/Father's day present. I bought it for myself and I'm glad I did!!
