This review is from: Hommage Messiaen (Audio CD)
French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is particularly committed to contemporary music, soloist in several premieres of works by Boulez, Stockhausen, and Ligeti, friend of French composer Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992), studied with the composer second wife, Yvonne Loriod. With this recording, taped in February 2008, Aimard pays an affectionate tribute for the centenary of the composer birth, presenting wonderful readings of the Préludes pour piano (1928-29, among Messiaen's earliest pieces), two pieces from the Catalogue d'oiseaux (1956-58), two pieces form the Quatre Etudes de rythme (1949-50). In the preludes the music gently fluctuates, recalling in some ways the piano compositions of Debussy; the two pieces from the Catalogue d'oiseaux, inspired by bird songs, are melodies complex and full of surprises; in the two etudes the virtuosic playing creates a sort of seismic activity. All beautiful and demanding music that deserves repeated listening to be truly appreciated. Very good recorded sound, with the piano and the natural reverb of the recording location (Grosser Saal, Konzerthaus, Vienna) clearly and properly captured. One more reason to fully enjoy this music.
