5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding!
Gotye is from Australia (via Belgium) and is a one-man indie success story over there. Apparently he acted as his own manager, plugger and record label while working in a library by day and then got a fantastic response upon release there . 3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag
This is an album that starts off really well but trails from the middle onwards. Not only that but it is definitely a mixed bag, which you can either find good or bad. Each new track on it has a different genre but that doesn't have to be a bad thing, it assures you don't get bored of it, however for those buying this album for his singles, the rest of the album doesn't...

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding!, 5 Aug 2008

Gotye is from Australia (via Belgium) and is a one-man indie success story over there. Apparently he acted as his own manager, plugger and record label while working in a library by day and then got a fantastic response upon release there . He has subsequently won a plethora of prestigious awards including both the Australian equivalent of the Mercury Music Award (the AMP) and a BRIT Award (the ARIA for Best Male Artist), in 2007.

First single `Hearts A Mess' soars and swells into an orchestral gem with an outstanding vocal performance. `Coming Back' exhibits the signature Gotye method of conjuring a kind of filmic atmosphere while weaving in his own tale of heartache. `Learnalilgivinanlovin' weaves brass samples into Gotye's Motown-esque vocal harmonies to super-catchy effect. `Puzzle With A Piece Missing' is all echoed snares, rim shots and reggae horns `The Only Thing I Know' is a melody of stadium-sized proportions. Whilst `Night Drive's evocative balmy Miami percussion links Gotye to all the other creatively minded 80's babies that are delving into their childhood memories of radio pop to reforge a sound for the 00s.

A superb album, it deserves to do very well.

This album is an absolute breath of fresh air. its the album Sting or Peter Gabriel would love to able to make if they could still be relevant.
every track is wonderfully produced and has you singing along to it in no time. the stand out tracks are
"YOUR HEARTS A MESS" and "Thanks for Your Time" they are instant anthems. its been ages since the music world has produced someone as gifted and refreshing as GOTYE. enjoy him now before the mainstream have him dueting with JLS and Lady gaga etc
a must CD for anyone who loves good music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Energy and humour in the darkness, 18 April 2012

This is an exuberant album featuring lots of drums and percussion, reggae and clever sampling, including a base rhythm from Harry Belafonte. The lyrics are clever, but often dark and sad, even when the music is upbeat. Your Heart's a Mess is heartbreaking, full of yearning and compassion, while Thanks for Your Time is hilarious and will remind you of every time you've tried to call a big company. Coming Back and The Only Thing I Know are both very powerful, stick-in-your-head songs. If you enjoyed Making Mirrors, you'll like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars ....desperate to connect...., 17 April 2012

'Heart's A Mess' is my favourite...maybe of all time and everyone, not just this album - complex, mesmeric, unpredictable, maybe even scary and unsettling when arrhythmic percussion comes in half way through...Love the soaring vocal of the line 'it makes no sense, but I'm desperate to connect...'
I'm not much of a music buff and purchase rarely, but as soon as I heard 'Somebody that I used to know' on the radio I wanted to buy the album and was then led to finding this one, which I like even better.
'Coming Back' (deep, Tango-esque rhythm) and 'Night Drive' (evocative, filmic quality) are other tracks I particularly enjoyed.

I haven't been inspired by an album since hearing 1999 by Prince and the Revolution! It is so refreshing to hear something so laden with musical colours, it glows. Walter's voice has been compared to Sting, Steve Winwood or Peter Gabriel and I hear so many other influences in his music from Talking Heads, Stevie Wonder, early Motown and Bjork to Augustus Pablo and Lee Perry. Yet he still remains completely unique. There is not a single track on this album a am indifferent over, every one is fantastic. I on purposely bought Drawing Blood before Making Mirrors because I wanted to completely absorb this earlier work before getting involved in an album I knew I would love. I can't choose between them now but I would say Drawing Blood is a classic.

It is difficult, if not impossible to categorise Gotye, his wide range encompasses so many styles a genre, however without exception they are quirkily brilliant. If you like the odd, and the different, this is for you.
