4.0 out of 5 stars OK drive, but hot with no power switch.
Having been spending the last few weeks trying to recover from an HD crash (a 4 year old IBM/Hitachi Deskstar, aka, Deathstar), I got this LaCie drive to do regular backups. The item was delivered promptly with the usual Amazon efficiency and the disk has performed well with USB2, and Firewire400 & 800 connections.
The drawbacks to this drive is that it has no heat...

2.0 out of 5 stars Used to think they were good but not any more
Have bought 3 of these drives and was very happy with there performance until the most recent purchase, the drive died after less than a month taking 3 days hard work with it, complained to lacie and the response from them follows.
Thank you for contacting LaCie support. We're sorry to hear that your Rugged has failed as soon as it has. While we do make every...

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need!,
Lacie's hard-drive is all you need if you are looking for a small and handy 500GB hard-drive. No mains, no fuss, practical size and fast enough. Highly recommended!
2.0 out of 5 stars Fast but POOR Firewire hardware longevity,
I was initially very happy with the LaCie but then the Firewire 800 port starting giving a lot of grief after just 2 months. Now incredibly difficult to even use the drive even with changing to other cables. Very poor hardware. Had to buy equivalent Iomega eGo drive now to replace this.
5.0 out of 5 stars SIG for this Captain Scarlet Indestructible drive,
Had many hard drives over the years, most impressed with this one, which I bought when it was first released. It truly is Captain Scarlet indestructible (more of that later) as it dropped onto the floor after the laptop it was connected to accidentally got moved.
The Rugged was plugged in at the time, so I feared the worst. However, the rubber bumper must do the trick, because although it didn't mount back on the Mac, I was able to reformat it and it still works perfectly 18 months later.
I would recommend it, and am looking to get the 1TB version next.Only criticism, for the extra quid or two in materials, it should include a few extra coloured sleeves in the pack.
Designer Neil Poulton was a fan of Gerry Anderson programmes as a kid (same as me) Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet, and the rubber bumper is a nod to that series, emulating the bumper on the SPV :-)
5.0 out of 5 stars Great piece of kit,
I now have 3 of these and they are excellent. Very transportable and the back up software is good although I use 2 of them with Apple's time machine software too!
Great for keeping back ups and transporting large data safely
4.0 out of 5 stars Ive always been a fan,
I like to pay a little extra and try and buy something that is a bit more trusted and i think that i can trust this drive but the only thing i would say is that the rugged part is a bit i am not so impressed with. It is a bit floppy around the edges I think that they could have done it in a bit more of a less tacky way.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good all rounder,
This hard drive does what it says.
Robust yet light weight, BUS powered so its nice and tidy and its quick !
Any self respecting film maker/editor/musician or photographer needs one of these.
The only downside is the rubber covering only comes in one tango orange, I like the colour
but theres no way of differentiating between drives.
I recommend the firewire version.
An excellent product. Smiles.
4.0 out of 5 stars USB power,
The LaCie looks and feels great, is VERY lightweight and quick to use.
One -ve I've found is that some PCs require both USB and the USB to power cables plugged in which uses 2 USB sockets for one hard drive.
I'm confident it will last a long time though as the connections are well protected.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rugged,
bulkier than other portable hard drives, but really light weight.
would have been good if it came in different colours.
this is my 4th Lacie External hard drive & all of them have been fantastic.
