4.0 out of 5 stars OK drive, but hot with no power switch.
Having been spending the last few weeks trying to recover from an HD crash (a 4 year old IBM/Hitachi Deskstar, aka, Deathstar), I got this LaCie drive to do regular backups. The item was delivered promptly with the usual Amazon efficiency and the disk has performed well with USB2, and Firewire400 & 800 connections.
The drawbacks to this drive is that it has no heat...

2.0 out of 5 stars Used to think they were good but not any more
Have bought 3 of these drives and was very happy with there performance until the most recent purchase, the drive died after less than a month taking 3 days hard work with it, complained to lacie and the response from them follows.
Thank you for contacting LaCie support. We're sorry to hear that your Rugged has failed as soon as it has. While we do make every...

5.0 out of 5 stars Long term use of LaCie Rugged - everything great so far,
I purchased a La Cie Rugged 500 around three years ago as data back up, storage, and to use for manipulating large projects like Photoshop files, and editing on Final Cut Pro alongside my Macbook Pro. So far, so excellent ... (maybe it'll die tomorrow!! :-)). The hard drive has proved nothing but reliable and I have given it very hard use. While I know it's not great practice to edit on a external drive without it's own power source, my Rugged La Cie has hosted many of my straightforward professional editing projects using Final Cut Pro with absolutely no problems at all. It has got very hot at times slaving away while I copy across, edit and photoshop and draw on it to write DVDs, while carrying it around everywhere, and I have not had any trouble with it at all. It's robust, good looking, highly portable, sturdy and reliable and the orange colour is great. As my friend says, "if it's not backed up, it doesn't exist", so I always have everything double backed up in case of failure. If my rugged HD died tomorrow, I would consider it excellent value for money. Highly recommended from me.
2.0 out of 5 stars Whilst it appears tough, it failed quicker than my last HDD,
Bought this as I've had two toshiba's fail on me. This lacie hasn't lasted as long as they did. Very frustrating given the extra price and the fact that I don't believe that I'm tough on them. This lives either on my desk at home with my laptop or when on the move it lives in my Lowepro camera bag, a very well protected bag that doesn't get thrown around. Just have to keep trying to find a reliable brand but have to say I'm very disappointed.
5.0 out of 5 stars Lacie 500GB drive firewire,
Good, efficient service, great price, quality product arrived promptly. Worthwhile paying extra for this item for MAC users as it has 2 ports: USB and Firewire.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very good!,
This was recommended to me from teachers at my University and I am glad I ordered it. It works brilliantly, does it's job, is reliable and because of the way it's built I am less worried about it becoming damaged. Highly recommend this hard drive.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid HD. Worth the money.,
This is my fourth HD from Lacie and I am yet to have any significant problems with any of them. I also have a 250GB rugged, which I've nearly filled over the past two years and it's still going strong.
So far, this one is going well and gives me plenty of connectivity options. I can't comment on it's durability as I have only had it for a month. That said, going on previous experience with Lacie HDs, my experience is nothing but positive.
4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had to return the first one of these I bought as it didn't work properly with my macbook pro. However, the replacement works fine so I'm assuming the first was faulty. Does what I want it to do - backs up fast using Apple Time Machine. Not convinced it would survive a fall or knock but the rubber cover probably gives some protection.
3.0 out of 5 stars LaCie 500gb,
Delivered as promised and in excellent condition. It's a fantastic storage unit fully portable and the FW400 & FW800 makes it worthy. Good looking too!
1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Rubbish,
After using for about two months the usb port fell off and was unusable. Like others I have had dire customer service from Lacie.
I had to return the hard drive to France - at my cost - and they have now lost it!!!
They are rude and unhelpful. DO NOT BUY. The company is one of the worst I have ever dealt with.
4.0 out of 5 stars Verry Good Not as rugged as the title says,
I have had a few of these and the reason for buying this one is that one of them decided to stop working! Unrecoverable error. So not as rugged as the title says but saying that it did last a year of backing up and traveling twice a week in my brief case for a bit over a year. Yes I would recommend one of these but just because it says rugged don't mean you can throw it about. But it will take a moderate bashing. The back up software that came with it was okay and easy to set up for doing local automatic backups.
5.0 out of 5 stars Another one added to my collection,
I now have six of these LaCie rugged drives and they have all behaved 100% reliably. I use them as a back up off site and their extreme portability and reasonable price combined with the option of having Firewire 800 makes them ideal for me as a Macbook Pro using photographer. I've even bought some different coloured jackets so that I can tell which are full and which are in use.
