4.0 out of 5 stars Nice try, but sometimes more really is less ..., 9 July 2008

Crooked Still have produced two excellent CDs of bluegrass with a twist - the twist being the interplay between four instruments in which the cello plays an unorthodox but brillient part (think bluegrass crossed with the best type of chamber music playing). Here they add an additional fiddle player, which although in theory should add to the overall range of their sound, to my ear actually takes away some of the drive and energy that they achieved previously and was the standout quality of their work. There are some good tracks here, but nothing quite up to the best of their previous work. Still just about worth four stars, but not quite up to the high expectations set by the previous two CDs.

Crooked Still - Still Crooked (Signature Sounds)
For a lot of modern Americana bands, the trick is to blur the lines. That's especially true of this latest wave of bluegrass and old time influenced string bands. Crooked Still are no different. Bluegrass provides the core of their sound, but it's their other influences that make their new record so appealing.

"Captain Captain" could have sat comfortably in Sandy Denny's repertoire - can't say that without mentioning that Aoife O'Donavan takes lead vocals throughout. "Did You Sleep Well?" wanders effortlessly into Gothic country folk territory, and "The Absentee" would have happily found a home on the Oh Brother soundtrack, if it weren't for the melancholy of Tristan Clarridge's cello in the background. 8/10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good foot tapping stuff, 21 Nov 2010

I got this cd a wee while ago and loved it from the first listen. If you like folk music then this is a great cd for you! the songs and the lyrics are like small stories that really make you sit down and listen to what the singer is saying. Im scottish and this is as good as any folk music i have heard in scotland or ireland. In short its a beautiful album thats puts you in mind of the old west.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful bluegrass, 5 Aug 2008

Meloncholic melodies, moving cello and ethereal vocals set a mellow mood on this excellent CD.In essence folk orientated vocals over light bluegrass / old timey backing provide a winnning formula which whilst cast in the Americas, is easily assimilated to British ears. A sure fire winner.
