4.0 out of 5 stars Before Terminator
Nowadays if you ask someone to name a film that has a robot shaped as a man that kills, people will say Terminator. Long before then though this fantastic movie had been made. In a special complex people can live out their dreams in Medieval World, Roman World, or West World. You can kill the robots and live out your fantasies (including sexual) with these androids...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Film - Ok Release
Westworld is a fun film, but the DVD is a let down. Based in the future, the film focuses on a theme park called Westworld, where vacationers, for $ 1000 a day, put on their cowboy gear and become part of a perfect recreation of the Old West. They can bust up a bar, drop in on a brothel and break out of jail. The town is populated by androids, programmed never to harm the...

Nowadays if you ask someone to name a film that has a robot shaped as a man that kills, people will say Terminator. Long before then though this fantastic movie had been made. In a special complex people can live out their dreams in Medieval World, Roman World, or West World. You can kill the robots and live out your fantasies (including sexual) with these androids. But what happens when they start to go wrong?

In an ideal holiday complex things are just about to go drastically wrong. With the androids going out of control the holidaymakers find that they are playing for their lives. Yul Brynner is excellent as the resolute killing android cowboy.

Although most people must have seen this film at some stage, it is always good to watch again and again. I have heard ruomours for a few years now that this is going to be re-made, but whether that will happen or not, we'll just have to wait and see.

This film is certainly one for the boys and a fun take on the Western Genre. The DVD has only one extra - the original trailer. The film is presented in 2.35:1 Widescreen. The transfer is typical for a film of this period, with signs of grain and slight damage here and there. Detail is good and contrast is above average. Soundtrack is adequate in Stereo; it's a 70's movie, so a 5.1 remix would be limited.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delos is the vacation of the future......, 4 April 2011

This review is from: Westworld [DVD] [1973] (DVD)
Westworld is written and directed by Michael Crichton and stars Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin. Story is set in the near future at an amusement park, no ordinary amusement park, tho. Here there are three worlds, Western, Medieval and Roman, where for $1,000 a day the clients can act out their fantasies in worlds alive with androids brilliantly made to look and act like human beings. But one day something goes wrong, there's a glitch and the androids fail to respond to their programming...

A monstrously great set up makes for a fine piece of sci-fi cinema. True enough to say that it needed a far better director than Crichton to fully realise the potential on offer, both visually and thematically, but Westworld manages to overcome the directors failings and reward the patient viewer. Seeping with bleak overtones as the scientists force technology to over reach itself, the film is propelled forward by a clinically robotic performance from Bryner as an android gunslinger. Clearly riffing on his character Chris Adams from The Magnificent Seven, Bryner is a perfect fit for a seemingly unstoppable force, cold dead shark eyes and fluid in the walk, he's a memorable sci-fi bad guy. Around him the rest of the cast are only adequate, but in a film revolving around androids looking like humans it's barely an issue. The effects used for the androids POV are effective, as is the reveal of what lays beneath the skin, while the finale plays out with pace and no little excitement.

Very much a forerunner to The Terminator, and even Predator, Westworld belies its 70s exterior to reveal an intelligent and potent little shocker. 7/10

I enjoyed this movie, so much that I've lent this to many of my work mates who equally enjoyed it. Once you've got over the 1970s style, it's actually an excellent sci-fi fantasy film. Plenty of suspense. Pity about the film title. 'Westworld' is not the best title, but I'm just picking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yul never be the same, 25 Sept. 2005

(VINE VOICE)
Theme parks get more sophisticated. Now instead of faking it with actors, the people at Delos have come up with the ultimate getaway; they have created several theme parks of which one is called "Westworld" and use robots instead. They can take real bullets and be repaired. As a side interest they also have other realistic body parts.
To this theme park comes Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin) for a little R&R. At first he is a little shy then he actually gets into things. Everyone is having a great time.
Unknown to the guests Delos is experiencing an anomaly with its system. It seems that in spite off all the fail safes a guest gets shot. Then everything snowballs out of control. The most out of controlest is a robot gun slinger that looks an awful lot like Yul Brynner.
You feel that you are there. So what can you do?

I first saw this film about 10 years ago and ever since it has stuck in my mind. Its such a unique story - there is nothing else like it out there. Even though i could remember bits of it, it was a pleasure to watch again. Well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars pre-Jurassic park, 21 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Westworld [DVD] [1973] (DVD)
Although a rather dated now, this film still manages to bring out the little boy in me every time I watch it. Yul Brynner is amazing as the malfunctioning robot with a lust for violence. Buy the DVD you know you want to.

just loved this - full of excitement and the unexpected - well acted, especially by Yul Brunner and the moustachioed one who doesn't seem to have made it to stardom. A family favourite for decades to come

4.0 out of 5 stars Robots go haywire in futuristic theme park, 15 Dec. 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Westworld [VHS] [1973] (VHS Tape)
Michael Crichton, in his directorial debut, delivers an entertaining movie in this story of two businessmen, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin, who decide to go on vacation to the futuristic (and ridiculously expensive)Delos resort. Out of the three possible destinations (westworld, roman world and medieval world), they opt for westworld. The difference from normal holidays is that, apart from the paying guests, all the inhabitants are high tech robots. The variety of robots, from bar tenders to prostitutes, perform every function required of them by the guests. all goes well until the wiring inside robot gunslinger Yul Brynner goes wrong. Soon all the robots are on the rampage, as one by one all the guests are killed, until only Benjamin remains, setting the scene for a suspense packed show down with Brynner. The acting is good enough, but as expected Brynner steals the show as the emotionless killer. Worth watching not just for western fans, but for all action enthusiasts.
