Terry Dean (Hogan) is a crook. A crook with a penchant for hold-ups and a genius for electronics. Prison is simply where he spends time in between heists. And parole is time for the next job.
But this time things don't quite go as planned.
Uncharacteristically saving a man from being run over, he himself is hit by the car.
Planning a bank robbery, a gang beats him to it: and he gets shot.
And that's just the start. For Dean becomes convinced that he's dead: that he's a probationary angel, put back on earth to earn his wings. (Watch out for Charlton Heston as St.Peter)
And so begins the attempt to discover what The Boss has in mind for him...
Turning over a new leaf brings unexpected friendships and emotional healing (Elias Koteas is excellent as the paraplegic Steve Garner), and unorthodox methods succeed as Dean does his bit in "doing God's work". (Pity the poor priest who is called upon to explain to Dean how one hears God's voice...) It is a story of friendship, and also a story of facing, and meeting, death. And yes, there's a twist in the tail of the tale!
At times funny, at times moving, this tale of redemption is vastly underrated. It is one of my all-time favourite movies: but there seems to be no move to bring it out on DVD.

Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski who starred in the 'Crocodile Dundee' films appear in this story that is moving and very humourous, that has a twist at the end.

By no means a Christian Faith film, but has some neat Biblical sub-plots.

I remember I saw this film on the cable channel in the early 1990s, a few years after it was made. Still great viewing, as it was back then.

It has finally come out on DVD by paramount pictures and it is in 16.9 widescreen suitable for widescreen TVs. There are no extras on it. But for the low price I paid for this DVD overseas here at amazon.co.uk, it was worth it.

If you like the 'Crocodile Dundee' films you will like this one.

Terry Dean is an exceptional career criminal, after his release from prison he is hit by a car whilst saving a young boy. He awakes in what appears to be a heavenly place, and much to his surprise he is visited by a deity and told that he is on probation, he is in short...almost an angel.

Paul Hogan will forever be known as the bloke from Crocodile Dundee, a highly efficient fish out of water comedy that became a huge hit. However, the sequels and his other subsequent film's are either roundly ignored or highly frowned upon. That's a shame because Almost An Angel is a very engaging comedy, the sort of picture that stands up like a Capraesque piece for the 90s. It's the sort of fable that cheers one up when the blues draw in and then turn into a blackly dark cloud, yes it be true, old craggy faced Paul Hogan has the gift of comedy. True enough the doses of sentiment are at times like a treacle itch to be scratched, but is that a bad thing? Watching a street wise criminal turning his less than honourable skills into a thing of goodness?

The film has many visual gags to go with the ream of religious ones that flow within the piece, be it Hogan attempting to fly or a quiet word about Elvis, Almost An Angel delights if one accepts the nature of the beast. Linda Kozlowski again teams up with Hogan (after the earlier Crocodile Dundee pairing), here she has very little to do but she slots in very nicely, even if a pre-end credits sequence does her and everyone else no favours at all. The best actor on show is the criminally undervalued Elias Koteas, playing the wheelchair bound Steve Garner, he exudes a believability factor that many modern day actors can learn from, where, the ability to act with just your face is high art if it's done correctly. Check out both the first and last scenes that Koteas shares with Hogan, great stuff that seems to have been forgotten due to the disdain shown for this particular film.

I rate it 7/10 because it hits my spot when I need a pick me up, perhaps that is too high in this age where comedy is the hardest genre to succeed in? But don't believe the low rating here on this site, it's a delightful little comedy that is far from perfect, but hell! It's a heavenly piece knowingly incorporating the serious side of religious beliefs.

While in recovery, he dreams that Charlton Heston dressed as God, visits him and tells him he's an Angel, and must start doing good things to make up for his past life.

Not believing it at first, he too becomes convinced. Not having any powers yet, he must use his own experiences and talents to make good things happen......

Back in 1990 this looked like a sure fire hit, getting the guy from Crocodile Dundee, and making him an Angel, but with a dangerous side. The thing is with Hogan is that, if you are of a certain age, your mum was guaranteed to fancy him, so he had a devout fan base.

But as I've realised thanks to education and common sense, you are only as good as the material you are in, and this has to be one of the biggest vanity projects I've ever seen.

Even if Hogan wore a T-Shirt saying 'I'm really that good', it couldn't get any back slappingly obvious.

He works for The Lord, he's a robber but everyone loves him, he helps kids, he makes a mans last few days his greatest, he convinces an old man to help people, basically he's great.

There are a few funny moments, the Rod Stewart bit is a highlight, but Hogan loves himself too much, and it ruins his character.

For die hard Hogan fans only, and your mum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and grossly underrated film, 13 April 2013
By
Vicky Welsby (NSW, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Almost an Angel [DVD] [1990] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This has to be among the most underrated films ever made. It's funny, moving and heart warming and is at least as good as Crocodile Dundee.

Electronics wizard, Terry Dean (Paul Hogan), is a career criminal. Released from jail, he uncharacteristally saves the life of a child and earns himself a second chance at life. After an encounter with god (Charlton Heston) and now believing he is a "probationary angel", he sets about using his talents to help the needy.

His journey leads him to meet Steve, a paraplegic with a huge chip on his shoulder. Steve is permanently angry and picks a fight with Terry. Having evened things up by sitting himself down in a chair, Terry invites him to take his best shot. The other people in the bar are appalled by this and run to Steves defence. The community sees Steve as nothing more than "a cripple" and, when Steve asks Terry what it is he sees him as, he clearly isn't expecting Terrys response of "A man in a wheelchair - acting like a jerk in a wheelchair". This response obviously shocks him, but the fact that Terry looks beyond Steves disability and sees a human being immediately cements their friendship.

This is a truly wonderful film which most certainly doesn't get the accolade it deserves. Paul Hogan is brilliant, as are Elias Koteas (as Steve) and Linda Kozlowski (as Steves sister, Rose). There is a twist and the ending does actually leave you wondering. Definitely one of my favourite films ever. Thank goodness they've finally seen fit to release it on DVD.
