An excellent tutorial and reference on the topics it covers. Essential topics such as PIM (v1 and v2) and IGMP (v1 and v2) are very well explained. However, this book is sorely in need of an update: It only briefly mentions source-specific multicast and talks about MSDP as being a fairly new thing. Anycast-RP isn't even mentioned, presumably because they didn't exist (or were only brand-new) when the book was published. On the other hand, it covers in detail other topics which have fallen by the wayside (is anybody using DVMRP anymore ?) or never really took off in the first place.

If I were reviewing this book 5 years ago I would certainly have awarded it 5 stars. However, the world has moved on considerably since 1999. If you are looking for a good introductory book on multicast and are willing to "filter out" the material that is no longer relevant and do some further reading of your own to supplement what is there, you could do much worse.

This book is pretty good for learning the basics of multicast but much of what is happening in multicast development is missing and it needs to be updated. Sparse mode and dense mode covered adequately but no sparse-dense mode and in particular is lacking other than a small reference - Bi-directional PIM which has gained importance in recent years, this topic need a whole chapter in itself.

This books is well constructed. It takes you through the fundamentals of Multicasting, then progresses at a steady pace into the detailed workings of various Multicasting protocols. This is an engineers handbook on Multicasting. Good use of sample scripts and diagrams.
