...An evil, evil record for evil, evil people..., 16 Jun 2008
This review is from: Cosmic Repackage (Audio CD)
Ulf Ivarsson is the fella who calls himself Beatundercontrol. Now I'm not entirely convinced that I want my beats kept under control. Sounds like the sort of Euro quota malarkey that should have us marching on Strasbourg, torches alight, and witk kindling a-plenty. But one time blues bassist Ulf is actually doing the complete opposite of beat control.
Apparently, once upon a time he was a member of "world music-techno marauders" Hedningama, something that stirred him into the world of experimental rock. And so it was that Beatundercontrol was born, eschewing everything we've held dear since the days of Noel Coward, to be replaced by a higgledepiggledy ragtag of dub, jazz and the plain weird.
This, second, Beatundercontrol album is exactly why we should withdraw from Europe, and become an insular, inward looking nation of morris dancers and Northumberland pipers. What with it's avante garde mixture of prog, dub, space rock, jazz and Krautrock, it's the kind of thing that deviant Eurolanders get up to when they're eating horse meat and indulging in peculiar sexual positions. In other words, it's just wrong.
It was bad enough when people like Jah Wobble first started messing around with this sort of dangerous music, but at least that was British, dangerous music. But remember, what happened the last time the Scandinavians headed our way with new thoughts and ideas. Let's not forget the year 866, when a Viking armada sailed up the river Ouse and over-ran the city of Eoforwic, renaming it Jorvik inbetween bouts of rape and pillage. Bandits.
Ulf Ivarsson says he is inspired by the Sex Pistols and the Clash, another two things we must hold against him, as he deliberately pleasures himself in public with bouts of freeform noise. That's when he's not soundtracking some sort of devilish, psychedelic, remake of The Wicker Man. An evil, evil record for evil, evil people. Don't say I didn't warn you.
