5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant product from Sony, 13 May 2008

This review is from: Sony Vaio VGX-TP2S/B Desktop PC Core 2 Duo (T8100) 2.10GHz 2048MB 500GB Blue-ray Combo Drive LAN WLAN Vista Home Premium (nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT 256MB) (Electronics)
This is the future of any home theatre. Make the right math and you will realize how this is a bargain: a decent spec PC, Blu-Ray player, Freeview recorder, MP3 jukebox... Virtually silent and very stable. Windows Media Centre works flawlessly and the product appearance is unquestionably wife friendly. Top notch Blu-Ray playback quality and support to all the latest novelties on the hi-def front.

Sony has done a fantastic job in putting this together, but you should bear in mind the following:

* It is a computer, hence some tweaking will always be necessary
* No subtitles on Freeview (apparently this is Microsoft issue)
* Only one tuner, so no chance to watch a different channel whilst recording, although you can play music, other videos or surf the web

Copy restriction on CDs and area codes on Blu-Ray and DVD are a bit annoying. Buy the excellent AnyDVD from SlySoft and all gets sorted very easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sony Media Centre PC, 18 Jan. 2009

This review is from: Sony Vaio VGX-TP2S/B Desktop PC Core 2 Duo (T8100) 2.10GHz 2048MB 500GB Blue-ray Combo Drive LAN WLAN Vista Home Premium (nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT 256MB) (Electronics)
This is a do it all device with incredible build quality typical of Sony but has a couple of major flaws.

1/ If you buy this from a UK retailer as I did you get a different spec machine it has two freeview tuners allowing to record two different programs or view one while recording another but they have removed the aux input so that you cannot record from another source like SKY.

2/ Once a program has been recorded you cannot copy it to a blank DVD disc to play on another machine as it records in a different format so don't throw away your old DVD recorder.

3/ As a PC it's not that fast but is bearable but even using it to surf the internet it's hard to read some text from the other side of the room even using a 37" flat screen.

Sony sells this as a do it all one box solution but due to the restrictions of Vista and Sony's copyright protection it falls short but using it as a media portal for photos, music etc it's amazing and the Blu Ray player is exptional but use this through Windows Media centre as the film runs in borders. It offers good value for money as it offers a juke box, DVD player, Blu Ray player, CD & DVD writer, Freeview and a PC in one very small box with minimum cables which is a lot cheaper than if you bought all these products seperatley.
