The debate of the death penalty has a pivotal role in the season and whatever your view on the death penalty this particular inmate may make you question your belief if you are pro. For me I have always been sat on the fence with it but this storyline has edged me toward a no. Along with the controversial death penalty debate we also have up for discussion rehabilitation programs , this time in the form of training guide dogs; we get to see the positive and negative side of it.
Onto some of the main characters. Keller is quite possibly the most dangerous character in Oz due to his manipulative qualities. Whereas Ryan always has someone else do the dirty work via money, Keller can use simple words to get things done and that makes for a very hard character to figure out his end game. Said in season 5 struggles with his identity; something all those of faith tend to face at some point, so it gives us a plotline which we are able to relate to, much like we did with Beecher as the new fish in season 1. My last character mentioned is Omar White, sure he is annoying at times but he tries so hard, and lets face it, God loves a trier and so do I, he is certainly one of the most invested characters of season 5 and one I just want to give a hug to and tell him he will be okay.
Episode 6; the musical edition should not work in such a serious environment and yet it does. A duet between Beecher and Schillinger has to be seen to be believed, it was so surreal.
Season 5 does not let down on the blood, rape or racism nor does it let up on the shocking deaths, one in particular was a genuine shock at the end.
For me season 5 was an improvement on season 4. Not as good as the first three seasons as again many of the new characters are introduced only to be shafted moments later whereas the first three seasons allowed for much more character allowance and thus more character development allowing us to invest and interest into them.
After the double length fourth season its understandable this season took a bit of a hit. This has been described by many as the point oz took its dive. The highlight of the season is the musical episode which sees augustus hill's monologes replaced by ironic songs by characters.
The violence in this season is also increased. Still worth a watch for oz fans everywhere.
another superb series, bought series one because I found it cheap in a supermarket, it was so good I ended up with all 6. Everyone is worth watching it is the best program I've seen that I can't recall has been on british television. If you have 1 to 4 get this and 6 now if you've never watched it start at season 1 and you'll end up with all of them.
I'm Italian, so sorry for any mistake i make :) Oz Season 5 is probably the worst among the six seasons of this great prison drama. Some reasons: many of the most interesting charachters are left a bit behind the story developments; the introduction of some kind of supernatural themes, fascinating but not really fitting into this real ugly world that is Oz; the fact that this is the fifth year, so the series starts to show signs of weakness, altough really few. On the other hand, despite what said before, Oz is still disturbing, compelling and excellent television. This season is also more experimental in style, including a musical episode. And above all, the surprise ending of the season finale really shocked me because it was something I thought impossible to happen among the walls of Oz. In conclusion: despite being the weakest of the six seasons, Oz season 5 is still great, brave and compelling television. If you're a series fan you have to see it, also to be prepared for the big shocking final season. If you are new to Oz, you should probably look to the earlier seasons instead of season 5... The box set is similar to the other five of the series: nice art and packaging, unfortunately no special features :(
Oz is brutal, shocking, & thought provoking. I have now purchased & viewed all 6 seaons and I can honestly say, it is one of the best "series" I have ever come across. The characters are so real at times you would think you were watching a very shocking Documentary. Definitely NOT to be watched with your mother-in-law present!!
Oz is one of HBOs best dramas and that's saying something. Not for the faint of heart; the characters and their inter-relations are complex and often violent. Season 5 is probably not the best season, but that still puts it far above any other prison drama I've seen.
