4.0 out of 5 stars dated
The Mott the Hoople Greatest Hits LP was the most played in my collection. But I haven't had a playable copy since 1987 and thought it was about time I got it on CD. I went for this extended double collection and the sleeve notes are very good filling in bits about the personalities I hadn't appreciated. But the music sounds a little dated and it has to be said that...

The Mott the Hoople Greatest Hits LP was the most played in my collection. But I haven't had a playable copy since 1987 and thought it was about time I got it on CD. I went for this extended double collection and the sleeve notes are very good filling in bits about the personalities I hadn't appreciated. But the music sounds a little dated and it has to be said that anything not written by Ian Hunter is of a poorer quality. The Greatest Hits will be a much better listen for anyone unfamiliar with their work. They had a consistently strong output while Hunter was on vocals.

Long awaited, this compilation finally does justice to a revered band which were prominent in the 70s and 80s.

You get 35 tracks for your bucks, all the chart singles, curiosities and hidden gems.

A timely compliment to the recent BBC documentary, may still be accessible on BBCi Player.

3.0 out of 5 stars 'The Best', with no 'Sea Diver', not really., 14 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Roll Away The Stone: The Best Of (Audio CD)
Overall, yes, a very good value for money package as far as the casual buyer is concerned, as the post-Island big hits are here, and there are a lot of quality tracks for the money.

BUT, to compile a CBS years collection and omit 'Sea Diver' from the 'All the Young Dudes' album is simply crass. This was a highlight of the aforementioned lp, a positively anthemic number for the band live, and rates as an all time favourite with Mott fans to this day. Leaving this out of a 'Best of' compilation was a completely absurd decision and cannot be defended in any way; any number of tracks on the second cd could have been substituted for this.

If this isn't important to you, then it's a safe enough purchase. But for those of you in the know looking for a real 'best of', this will be very disappointing.
