This review is from: Bizet : L'Arlésienne / La jolie fille de Perth / Carmen- Suites, Symphony in C (Audio CD)
This inexpensive EMI Gemini 2-CD set is a very worthwhile purchase giving, as it does, a pretty thorough survey of Bizet's orchestral works, probably all that most people need.

Although very good, Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields are not quite as successful here as they were many years before with their Argo recording Bizet: Carmen Suites/L'Arlesienne Suites etc with Bizet's Symphony in C and L'Arlésienne Suites 1 & 2 from 1994 - it'll more than do though, this performance. We are then given some of the recordings made by Daniel Barenboim when he was conducting the Orchestre de Paris in the 1970s. These are La Jolie Fille de Perth (Suite), Patrie (Overture), the Carmen Suite, and Jeux d'enfants - Petite Suite. These are in EMI/HMV's best analogue sound, very successfully remastered for CD.

The second CD is filled up with a recording of Roma - Suite de concert No.3 made in 1988 by Louis Frémaux and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

This is all tuneful stuff, not very deep, but very pleasurable.

A bargain, and recommended.
