2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting missing link between WCW & TNA, but it's not exactly good
Let's be clear - this is a bad show. The matches are terrible and the storylines lack any kind of interesting hook. It's no great surprise that the no decent feuds developed, with just three shows ever produced, but you'd at least hope for some decent action. Not here, unfortunately. Let's be clear - this is a bad show. The matches are terrible and the storylines lack any kind of interesting hook. It's no great surprise that the no decent feuds developed, with just three shows ever produced, but you'd at least hope for some decent action. Not here, unfortunately. That said, the roster was certainly interesting; a mix of WCW wrestlers that hadn't been picked up at the time by WWE like Buff Bagwell and Big Vito, WWE exiles like Sable and Jerry Lawler, young prospects like AJ Styles, and a bunch of over-muscled, talentless no-names to pad it out.

The only real reason to watch this is to see somebody (in this case Jimmy Hart and the Nasty Boys) try to kick start a new promotion in the wake of WCW's demise. There's a decent little documentary on the creation of this shortlived company present by Hacksaw Jim Duggan that explains the origin of the company and it's philosophy, which is worth a watch.

Speaking of this 'philosophy', the XWF really tried to get over the idea that this was to be, as they said, "wrestling without the politics", and that booking was to be based on who was the most talented. After reading that, I'm sure longer term wrestling fans will take another glance at the cover to check if that really was Hulk Hogan's name and image plastered over the DVD case. Indeed, this 'philosophy' gets thrown out the window with the first match, and essentially each match result is a case of the more famous guy coming out on top.

As for the presence of Hulk Hogan, he appears in the odd link, flexing and shouting things like "XWF, brother!", but his actual show appearances are limited to a single bonus match on the DVD extras vs Curt Hennig.

Overall, I can't recommend this as a good show; if you want that go elsewhere. If you want an alternative to a WWE/F or TNA pay-per-view DVD, get an old ECW show or something from the current indy scene like ROH/Chikara/Dragon Gate USA. But, if you want to know what could have been, or what a Tony Schiavone / Jerry Lawler commentary team sounds like, then get this.

The XWF was set up in 2001, shortly after World Championship Wrestling went out of business. The purpose of the XWF was to fill the void that WCW had left and to give fans an alternative to WWE (or at the time, the WWF).

The XWF (ran by Jimmy Hart, Hulk Hogan, Greg Valentine & Brian Knobs) certainly had the star power and the potential to succeed, but sadly the end product never made it to our screens.

Here on this DVD, we can finally get to see the "Lost Episodes" of the XWF.

It's hosted by Hart & Knobs (which is a detrament to the overall production, really) and features many former WWE/WCW/ECW names that all fans will be familiar with, as well as some that you may not have heard of (and in some cases, probably won't again).

Mean Gene is the interviewer, former WCW talent Tony Schiavone is on commentary (with Jerry "The King" Lawler, during Lawler's exodus from the WWF), Rena "Sable" Mero is the XWF CEO and Roddy Piper is the Commissioner.

The motto of the XWF is (or was) "No Prima Donnas", but there's no shortage of big-headed muscle-heads like Buff Bagwell and washed-up acts like The Nasty Boys.

That said, there is some great action on display from the younger generation (Vampiro, AJ Styles, Kid Kash etc) and it is a guilty pleasure to see Hulk Hogan in the ring again (although it's only once and as an DVD extra. The fact the Hogan is plastered all over the DVD cover should amount to false advertising).

While it has its flaws, this DVD still shows that the XWF (which offered a more family-friendly approach to wrestling) could have made it had everyone involved (especially Hogan, who talks about a lack of finances and the like as being the main reason that the XWF didn't make it, even though he was eyeing up a WWF return all along) stayed focused on the company and marketed it more (I don't believe for a minute that no TV company in America or the world didn't want to commit to this after they'd already started filming it).

Even if you like your're wrestling a bit more "grown up" and action-packed, you should still check this out. It's a great piece of wrestling history that should be viewed by "old school" and "new school" fans alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars XWF = WWE/F, WCW, ECW, TNA... All rolled into one... Kinda. :), 12 Jun 2012

This is awesome!!! It has elements of every major wrestling organisation of the last 20+ years & is Profetional Wrestlings missing link prior to TNA.

It's around a 3 hour DVD of the "lost epiesodes" of XWF, the wrestling brand of "Nasty Boy" Brian Knobs & Jimmy "Mouth of the South" Hart.
Created in the wake of WCW & ECW being purchased by WWE it predates TNA and seems to be a perfect template for what was to follow. The action was filmed around 2001 with extra segments from Knobs & Hart filmed a couple years later. Also contains extra match and interview with Hulk Hogan.

With comentery from the ledgend, Jerry "The King" Lawler & Long time WCW man Tony Schavony you know the matches are gonna be called well and "Hot Rod" Rowdy Roddy Piper as Comisioner just adds to the fun.
The action's great too with stars & styles from all over the world including, The Road Warriors "Legion Of Doom", Kurt "Mr Perfect" Hening, AJ Styles, Kid Kash, Marty Janetty, Nasty Boys, Vampiro, Psychosis, Greg "The Hamer" Valentine, Horace "Nephew of Hulk" Hogan, "British Storm" Ian Harrison, Juventud Guerrera, Konan, Buff Bagwell & Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka to name a few... I'll leave a few surprises... (Snuka & Piper saga continues) ;)

There's also a few special appearances from Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley from Kiss, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Alice Cooper, Rena Mero, Willie Nelson, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan & Mean Jean Oakland.

Honestly, for any wrestling fan this is amazing. All styles, tastes & generations catered for. Trust me... Buy it now!!!
