5.0 out of 5 stars Far superior to the Hollywood film version
This is the TV adaptation which came out several years ago shortly after the book became such a success and is far superior to the more recent film version which starred Scarlett Johanssen and Natalie Portman. It conveys much more accurately the atmosphere and tension of Philippa Gregory's superb novel and doesn't have the glaring gaps of the 2008 film (in which Mary is...

3.0 out of 5 stars The other other woman
Hollywood is releasing a new adaptation of Phillipa Gregory's "The Other Boleyn Girl," so unsurprisingly the older BBC adaptation is also (finally) seeing the light of American day.

And it's a pleasant, intimate little look at the difficult world of women in Tudor England. It's hampered by what is obviously a very low budget, but Jodhi May and Jared Harris turn...

I found this production mean and claustrophobic. The cast is great and the acting is great but i could not take it seriously. I understand the Directors intentions ( i Claudius anyone?) but it really doesn't work. The grainy texture of the film is pointless and pretentious and is probably to create distance from the viewer in order to obscure the fact that Henry's court seems only to have 7 or 8 people in it. The court lacks the bustle and business of how the court would have been.

I didn't make it to the end of this, i found it tiresome, pretentious and, well, cheap.

This is a truly awful drama.

It is really, really, really awful.

I almost wept from embarrassment while watching it.

The script is painful; the direction is bewildering; the acting is dreadful, which is made worse by the fact that the actors have performed well elsewhere. Jodhi May is ordinarily beguiling, but entirely wrong for the role of Anne Boleyn; Philip Glennister is wooden as William Stafford, despite his impressive performance in Cranford. The quality of production is poor, from the costuming to the sets to the lack of background music. What romance there is is squandered, and whatever quality there may have been in the original book is sadly lost. All the epic drama of the historical narrative is absent.

I beg you to save yourself and watch something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and compelling, 12 Oct. 2008
This review is from: The Other Boleyn Girl [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
A powerful and truly inspiring adaptation of The Other Boleyn Girl. All the performances are stunning. The rough camera work gives it an immediacy and power which is utterly compelling. It's low budget naturalism is a virtue. It doesn't distract with flash costumes and chocolate box locations. Instead it draws you in to it's world and makes you totally involved with the characters and their lives. Gripping from beginning to end.

The Other Boleyn Girl [2003]
I have not read the novel, but my impression is confirmed by other reviewers that a great deal of it has been cut in order to condense the plot into this jerky ninety minute BBC budget version, why on earth wasn't it dramatised as a mini series?

The most absurd aspect is the periodic appearances of the sisters Mary and Ann sitting down speaking direct to camera, further alienateing this viewer by creating a de facto narrative with two characters in first person; dialogue with a confidante would have been far more involving.

Lovers of the book may well find the film useful in providing a visual context, otherwise probably best avoided.

SAFE READING - NO SPOILERS

Philippa Gregory wrote a very enjoyable, interesting novel based on the facts central too and surrounding the early Tudor period, dealing with the lesser-known Boleyn girl, later over-shadowed by her younger sister. She is a person not well-known, a Boleyn who may come as a surprise to the general public. Henry may also appear differently. This young Henry is no Holbein portrait but a lively, well-educated, interested but womanising king almost on the cusp of entering that later period in which he changed so dramatically, unlike Henry in the recent "Tudors" series who does not age at all. (Somewhere in Hampton Court's attics, there must be a very ugly painting of an aged Henry!)
Gregory knows what she is writing about having done careful research and written on the subject before. She is also able to breath real life into these characters, making them people rather than historical characters. Often with history texts, because of the nature of the beast and the required objective style and stance of the writers, the people seem at one-removed; not so with Gregory. It is an enjoyable, easy to read "novel".

The DVD is very true to the novel and the actors are close to ways in which I had imagined them, unlike the more recent, "Hollywoodish" film.

Buy this rather than the more recent version.

Really enjoyed this. Different way of production - not hollywood style but british and BBC. There is a grain to the film. Would recommend it.
