5.0 out of 5 stars This CD should be better known as a classic of its genre, 2 April 2014

The very thought of only two pianos, then to learn that this is allegedly totally improvised and unscripted would turn many listeners off instantly, BUT DON'T BE! It sounds like a recipe for disaster. Surely only the arrogant would do this in public!

Nothing could be further from reality.

This performance of a totally improvised concert at the ICA in 1977 wasn't released until 2008, and to my shame I only discovered it a few months ago. I am not sure that this is "jazz" as such but certainly works as a public performance of spontaneous improvisation with the two musicians "feeding off" each other. Only great musicians could produce a performance that holds the listeners attention so well; one is always waiting to see in which direction the music will go next. Each musician is listening intently to his partner; each stimulates the other.

Apparently Stan and Keith Tippett worked together infrequently, and when they did so it was a concert of this nature.

This is not self-indulgent music played for the musicians benefit; it is entertaining. It isn't "background, easy listening", it is a serious public concert given to a discerning public.

Fully deserves 5 star rating.

'Supernova' is a remarkable but little-known piano duo album by Stan Tracey(1926-2013) & Keith Tippett(b. 1947).
It was recorded live at the ICA, London in 1977 but didn't see the light of day until 2008.
The level of empathy between the two pianists is astonishing and the five cosmological titles are appropriate for this inspired and dazzling duo.
A record that should be heard by all Tracey or Tippett fans.
