5.0 out of 5 stars Music for any century, 9 April 2008

This review is from: Glass: Songs and Poems for Solo Cello (Audio CD)
Lately, Glass seems to have been composing works in the style of what will probably be known as his "late" period, and they're among the finest he's ever written. This release is probably the culmination of this style to date, a dark, beautiful series of pieces for solo cello. The first of these is barely recognisable as Glass at all, with echoes of Bach in particular, and it takes a few listens to get your head around the structure as a whole. It's unquestionably a Great piece of music - that's great with a capital "G". More instant is Tissues, reworkings of pieces from the Naqoyquaatsi soundtrack, but these too have gathered depth in their revised form. An essential purchase, even for Glass-haters: this could be the one to convert you.

5.0 out of 5 stars an absolute favourite, 8 May 2011

I'm not a big classical music fan at all, so I can't really talk about this in the context of other classical pieces at all. I bought this because I like solo instrumental pieces whether classical or otherwise, and I liked the album Glass did with Leonard Cohen. This is just wonderful. Like most people, I tend to listen to a lot of "backround music" - stick a CD on while I'm doing something else. But this is not music for the background. It's totally involving. I particularly like the unforgiving, almost harsh recording. No reverb, no smoothing off the edges - you really hear the instrument in the raw. And, as a fan of popular/rock music, I particularly love the rhythms in these pieces. I'd say this is classical music for people who don't like twee, predictable classical music. I LOVE it.

Philip Glass' string music came as something of a revelation to me.

I am familiar with his early Minimalist works but these hauntingly beautiful, increasingly melodic pieces for cello are quite unlike anything else of his that I have heard until now.

The first seven pieces for solo cello ('Songs') arose partly out of workshops with the cellist Wendy Sutter and what a collaboration that turned out to be! Rich, complex, subtle and achingly beautiful at times, this is cello music by a modern composer that at times gives Bach a run for his money.

The second half of the CD consists of our pieces for cello and percussion, with Glass himself on piano. These he calls 'Tissues' and they have the delicacy of the finest Chinese rice paper

If anything, these subtle, at times delicate compositions are even more beautiful.

The occasional introduction of a tremulous, muted gong or what I take to be tubular bells - plus Glass' piano forming an equally subtle accompaniment - allow Sutter's command of her 17th century Stradivari cello to soar.

Wonderful music.Buy it. Now!

The beauty and richness of this cello is incomparable to anything I have heard. Glass is great as well. Not to be missed

Works for solo cello in the modern repertoire are quite rare, and Philip Glass's new contribution is greatly welcomed. Wendy Sutter treats the music as if it were a wedding gift! Let's hope this partnership lasts, and Glass writes more for this instrument. The genius of Glass focussed on a single instrument is a superb listening experience.
