3.0 out of 5 stars Too long to arrive
This series arrived in reasonably good condition. The DVDs were in very good condition. The package, however, took more than two weeks to arrive unaccountably. I received no explanation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The number one super cartoon, 18 Oct 2009
This review is from: Hong Kong Phooey - Complete Box Set [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Enjoy all 16 episodes (I'm amazed there were only that many!) of probably the best 70s cartoon series. The animation is of course fairly basic, but the characters and stories are anything but. The hero is Penry Pooch, a dog who works as a janitor at a police station. He listens in on the crime reports as they are radioed in then transforms himself into a superhero: a kung-fu fighting... idiot. The humour of the set-up is that Penry is utterly incompetent and all the bad advice he gets from the 'Hong Kong Book of Kung Fu' doesn't help much either, but like Inspector Clouseau he always keeps his dignity. Ultimately he always captures the villains and solves the crimes, but he does so either through complete luck or by the actions of his clever (but never appreciated) side-kick Spot the cat.

The series stands up well today, perhaps because unlike the other good Hanna-Barbera cartoons it has been seen only rarely since, so it still feels fresh. Obviously it's not a masterpiece to be put up there with the better modern computer animated films and so some rose-tinted nostalgia is required to enjoy fully. But the comedy is often quite clever, relying less on slapstick and more on inventive ideas and character-based humour. The voices are also well done and there are many good running jokes and nicely-played relationships such as the one between Penry and Rosemary, who received the calls at the police station and adores Hong-Phooey but like Lois Lane is oblivious to Penry. All in all, the show deserves its reputation as being the last great HB cartoon series.

Hong Kong Phooey is a memorable '70's cartoon about a super-hero dog whose real name is Penry, whose Kung Fu seems to go wrong all the time. He always wins however, with a little help from his side-kick cat Spot who is always on hand to save the day but without recognition or reward.

Penry (voiced by Scatman Crothers) works as a "mild-mannered" janitor in the police-station, eaves-dropping on the conversations of Rosemary the telephone operator and generally annoying the Sarge through his incompetent bungling. He transforms into his alter-ego Hong-Kong Phooey by leaping into the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet and emerging (with some assistance from Spot) from the top drawer in his mask and red Kung Fu costume.

The show has a very memorable theme tune which was covered by Sublime some years ago. The picture-quality is generally very good although there are one or two places where it probably needs touching up. The collection comes on two discs, there being 31 short adventures grouped into two adventures per episode, apart from the very last one (which is longer). There are no extras but you can access the individual adventures from the menu.

It's all pretty harmless cartoon fun, although I understand that a live-action film is currently being made, which doubtless will involve a great deal of modern technology. But these modern adaptations lack the charm of the originals on which they are based.

So buy this DVD and see the original as it was meant to be seen. The younger you are the louder you will laugh, of course.
