5.0 out of 5 stars A kick-ass, original, indie thriller..!
I first saw this late one night on Channel 4, and immediately realised i was seeing an incredibly original, quirky, intelligent thriller, of the kind that had - to my mind - been absent since the early '90's heyday of Man Bites Dog, True Romance and Reservoir Dogs.
I won't go into the plot, as it'll spoil it, but suffice to say, it keeps you gripped to the end. (...

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay
Another lesson in the art of filming variables.

It sits somewhere between the tedium of Groundhog Day and the love theme in Sliding Doors.

It's okay but not a film you'd want to watch more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastisch, 1 Feb 2003
By
This review is from: Run Lola Run [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
German punkette, Lola, has exactly twenty minutes to find 100,000 DM and deliver it to her boyfriend who lost a bag of money he was taking to his violent boss. Run Lola Run is a fast paced and clever film there is not a dull moment in the movie.
Lola's race to save her lover is repeated three times with minor variations that lead to widely different endings. It shows that the little things we do each day can change our lives.
The soundtrack throughout is excellent and director Tom Twyker has taken the central image of a flame-haired girl running and woven a tapestry of chance encounters with odd characters around it. Using a dazzling variety of visual techniques - animation, shooting on film and video - Twyker blurs the line between what is reality, and what might become reality.
It's like a sexy version of "Sliding Doors", or perhaps a "Groundhog Day" for the new millennium, it works both on a technical level and as sheer entertainment.

This is an all time classic. It's the first film that I watched that left me feeling breathless/exhausted at the end, simply because you feel as if you're in the film itself. The story focuses on how Lola has 20 minutes to raise 100,000 German marks to save her boyfriend. Without giving the plot away, little decisions that are made by the characters can change the outcome of the story. The film itself is fast paced with a good soundtrack - even the opening credits are presented in a unique way that hooks you in. If you miss a couple of minutes of the film to get a cup of tea, you're probably going to need to rewind the film. There are touches of humour in the film, but for the most part the film will have you ont he edge of your seat. The film is in German and I would recommend people watch it with subtitles rather than the dubbed option, as it's much better hearing the original characters' emotions. Lastly, I'm actually surprised at just how cheap this DVD is being sold for on Amazon - I cannot recommend this film highly enough!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but not on BD, 9 April 2009
This review is from: Run Lola Run [Blu-ray] [2008] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
I love this film but its not worth the extra on blu-ray. The picture quality is poor and the sound is not improved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking and insightful, 17 Feb 2009

This is a stunning film.

The story is simple and spans a period of only twenty minutes. Lola has to raise 100,000 German Marks or her boyfriend will die, and the film tells the story of those twenty minutes through three different storylines. Each reflects the effects of slight changes, moments of delay, minor deviations, alternate choices and each plays out the effects these have on the future.

We see how the future is written and rewritten by a glance, a moments hesitation, and act of chance connection or disconnection. Three stories are told, but we glimpse the infinity of stories that could and are taking place in every moment and the chain of interconnections that mean that each change changes everything.

The film style matches the frenetic intensity of the impending deadline. The music and cinematic style create an energy such that the viewer doesn't simply view but experiences the heart pounding exhaustion of the race against time.

It is a film that lays before you the immensity of opportunity that exists in every one of our moments, if only we are alive to see them.

I found the name of this film scribbled on the back of a piece of paper deep in a jacket pocket. How long it lay there and quite what chance made it surface and not be discarded or overlooked is of course the story of the film. I thank whoever it was that gave me the note and heartily pass on their recommendation that you must see this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars So different and so watchable., 26 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This is a refreshingly different and original video. None of the Hollywood smoothness and sentimentality. It provokes thought by fascinating the viewer with the age-old "what if?" scenario. Despite the storyline being re-run with clever twists three times over, it holds the attention well, is well paced and employs some startlingly thoughtful camera angles... very useful for media studies students who wish to brush up their 'textual analysis' skills. The subtitles do not impede the overall effect and message (indeed, you can brush up your German while you watch). The film is well cut and perfectly timed... functioning in real time. It does not disappoint and once again is a film that serves to powerfully demonstrate that good cinema does not require an enormous budget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frenetically fast, funny and funky...a modern day classic!, 29 Aug 2000
By A Customer
If you like dance music, temporal twists, and thought provoking action this is the film for you. A modern Groundhog Day, focussing not on personal redemption, but the ability of Lola the fast running/talking/thinking orange haired wonders ability to fix her boyfiends problems. Shows what a complex turn of events conspires to bring about success in the modern world. Filled with humor, sorrow and thought provoking "what if...?" situations, mixed with some cracking tunes that make you want to get off your seat and hit the streets. Crank up your TV, get on that treadmill and pop this video in, you'll lose weight.. and be entertained. As for all you sceptics who worry that the German dialogue reduces the pace of the film.. don't, after a short period you'll forget you're watching a subtitled film and want to scream at Lola "Schnell Schnell!".

4.0 out of 5 stars A great film set in a great city, 26 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Run Lola Run [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
This film must be watched in German, with subtitles, or without if you CAN understand German. It is set in Berlin which is a city in flux and constant change with apparently endless possibilities now that the wall has come down. And the plot strands are like chaos theory - where a small change in one variable can make a huge impact on the final outcome. Lola Rennt is exciting. The pace is tremendous - and it shows that Germany can produce some great films. Watch it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically well put-together; full of energy!, 17 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Run Lola Run [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
A brilliant film. It's directed and acted by all the main players with a superb sense of energy. By far, the most enjoyable way to see it is in German with English subtitles; there's a few moments spoiled by somewhat suspect dubbing. The whole film is such a polished package; the soundtrack fits absolutely perfectly, and carries the same thumping sense of intensity and energy as the rest of the film. Makes you think a bit too, it's rather deep subject matter; about how split second decisions can affect everything that follows. Provokes some interesting discussions, and really worth buying. GET IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic., 30 April 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Run Lola Run [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
Fantastic film. It manages to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout while simultaneously illustrating how split second decisions and chance encounters all have such a great impact on the future and how so many people's lives intertwine without us really knowing. As has been quite rightly said before: Don't let the dubbing put you off. Yeah, it's really apparent and cheesy for the first minute or so, but you are soon so absorbed in the film it doesn't matter. You can almost forgive the Euro-pop dancey music.. which is actually well suited. Excellent.
