Many people are simply too young to remember or have forgotten that Wendy Craig was named as the funniest woman on television almost forty years ago! (long before 'Butterflies') She had TV sitcom after TV sitcom of success - from the 1960s through to the 1980s. 'And Mother Makes Three' began in 1971 and ran for five years - culminating in 'And Mother Makes Five' in 1976.

This is the first Season of seven episodes. The first few do seem to struggle a bit, but once it finds its feet (about half way in) these are very funny indeed, and the episodes just get better and better!

Also stars Valerie Lush as 'Auntie' and David Parfitt as a child star who would go on to produce 'Shakespeare In love' years later!

Guest stars Gary Raymond.

Point: Notice how young the children looked for their ages in those days? These were all teenagers at the time of filming! Surely this is evidence of our children growing up far too quickly nowadays?

Further proof if it were necessary that television comedy was much better in the 1970's than today. I'm old enough (just) to remember this first time around and was delighted to learn of its' DVD release.

Times seemed much more innocent back then, less complicated as well. Oh and of course, the weather was always great (apart from in the opening titles).

Hurry up and release the follow-up, "And mother makes five".

4.0 out of 5 stars Finaly on dvd but with a small edit?, 3 Oct 2008

It's great to see this show on dvd. But it's a shame that one of the episodes called "Pound Of Flesh" has been edited. It's in a scene where Sally ( Wendy Craig) is trying to do some fitness routines to a radio show. One of the exercises had her swinging a couple of un-cooked chickens around, which of course slip out her hands. This moment has been edited out, as the song on the radio was The Sweet's song 'Funny Funny'. It looks like they couldn't get permission to use it, as at the bottom of the back cover it reads ' *for contractual reasons this episode differs from the transmitted version'.It's a shame, because it was a memorable moment of the show.

It took me straight back to my childhood and possibly terrible times of fashion and interior design but things seemed so much happier then. A great one to watch with young ones as I say I am sure the fashions will give them a laugh!!

This DVD brought back a lot of old memories, and was thoroughly enjoyed. I will be moving on to And Mother Makes Five soon. Well worth watching.
