5.0 out of 5 stars A great sitcom in decline..., 2 May 2008

This review is from: Not On Your Nellie - Series 2 And 3 - Complete [DVD] (DVD)
The second season of the classic 70s sitcom starring Hylda Baker sees a new 'Ali' (the previous one having left) and 'Big Beryl' replaced also by the better-known actress Wendy Richard. The bar is still pretty full to begin with but the quantity of extras is most certainly in decline as this season progresses...

This second set kicks off with three of the most hilarious episodes - including one where we see Nellie as a schoolgirl, and another where we see her attempting to 'ape' her betters in a brilliant story featuring the late and great Patsy Rowlands!

I must confess to being a little upset when watching Hylda Baker so roughly handled in the episode featuring 'Battling Bill' (Brian Glover) In particular, the very hard and loud slap on the back that she receives from him (which incidentally, I feel!!) Hylda Baker was an elderly lady, and this must have been uncomfortable, if not painful... I always find this episode somewhat difficult and distressing to watch, but of course still very funny, knowing that Hylda enjoyed making us laugh - whatever it took! There are some big names featured in this second season - including a very good-looking Richard Wilson!

The third and final season is quite painful to watch. Though it breaks my heart to say it, the last season of this great comedy that consisted of just a mere four episodes was at times extremely embarrassing to sit through... This has absolutely nothing to do with Hylda Baker or her talents, but due only to the fact that almost the entire original cast had left the series by this third set of episodes; Jed (Nellie's father), George (Gilbert's partner), Beryl (the original barmaid), Ali ( the 'underworld' railway worker!) and even Nellie herself by the penultimate episode!

It seems incredible now that they even believed that this series could survive with so many departures, and then the loss of the lead character due to an accident. Needless to say, the series just fell apart as a result... However, the three stories for the first three episodes were good, but would have been more funny, if the original cast had been present, but the barmaid had been replaced by Sue Nichols, who was not as talented in this as she is now in 'Coronation Street'. Because Gilbert's partner 'George' had left, they had to 'milk' Gilbert's character for all it was worth, but as he had a non-speaking role, this was precarious and problematic... Ali, despite his small role, was much missed, and of course Nellie's father had been a very funny and key character throughout the series - marvellously played by John Barrett. His departure in particular had left a terrible void that simply could not be filled... Of course it is needless to say that when Nellie had gone herself, there was no future for this sitcom, and in fact, the last episode was made up of a mad-hash of anything, and was probably much ad-libbed, and created as it went along - certainly seems that way now. Only the characters Charlie and Gilbert would attempt hopelessly to hold the last episode together which was just an impossible task...

A big mistake was the bringing in of Jack Douglas for this last season - despite how good he had been in the 'Carry Ons', he was ill-fitted to this sitcom, and tried overly hard to be funny which only resulted in his being embarrassing to watch....

For all these reasons, I find it extremely difficult to sit through this last short season, and only do so, because I am so loyal to Hylda Baker, and so attached to her sitcoms. I also suspect only ardent fans would have been interested in purchasing this last set of episodes, and I guess that's why these were sold as a 'package' deal with season two, in order for them to sell any at all...

5.0 out of 5 stars Not On Your Telly!, 6 Sep 2008

I have to say that yes indeed the final series of this sitcom was dire but you must remember that the other popular actors from series 1&2 left for various professional reasons at the time and when that happens to any series it does suffer as the fans don't like it. The makers of the DVD release make sure you have a clear understanding that all the episodes are 'uncut and complete' and for very good reasons, the episode with Brian Glover for instance was re-edited for TV at the time, I know becuase I remember the big uproar covered by TV Times about Ms Baker suffering physical abuse oftern in many episodes by over zealous actors! I still have the cutting!

Anyway, it's very funny for die hard fans of 'our Hylda' So, for all you politically correct people - stay away and let us traditional lot watch it in peace!

Absolutely hilarious !!!
Not the best of acting or storylines, by any of the performers, but Hylda Baker with her wonderful malaprops, never fail to make me laugh.
All in all, just good old fashioned entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nostalgic laugh a minute, 5 Feb 2012
This review is from: Not On Your Nellie - Series 2 And 3 - Complete [DVD] (DVD)
We had forgotten what a true comedy actress Hylda Baker was until we sat down and watched this DVD. A classic 1970's comedy with lots of stereotype comedy performances from the cast, however we couldn't stop watching. If you love Nearest and Dearest then buy this one.
