5.0 out of 5 stars The Rag Trade - LWT Series 1
The Rag Trade originally started in the early 60's on the BBC and included Reg Varney (On The Buses fame)in its cast. A few years later LWT produced this series and include Anna Karen in the cast playing the same character from On The Buses - Olive Rudge. However the series really belongs to its two main stars Peter Jones as Fenner and Miriam Karlin as Paddy the shop...

The Rag Trade originally started in the early 60's on the BBC and included Reg Varney (On The Buses fame)in its cast. A few years later LWT produced this series and include Anna Karen in the cast playing the same character from On The Buses - Olive Rudge. However the series really belongs to its two main stars Peter Jones as Fenner and Miriam Karlin as Paddy the shop steward. The charisma of Peter Jones and Miriam Karlin together is an instant hit. Based in the garment industry which has fast faded from the British scene because of cheaper products from abroad. This gives a hint of the enjoyable times that were had in small factories in the past. This is not just a great comedy show, but a bit of social history that has now gone. It is nice to see this on DVD as it gave hours of enjoyment on TV, now more hours on DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money, 9 Jan 2010

Bit dubious of buying this as memory can mislead you but, all in all, good value. Peter Jones is a natural comic actor and the setting in a small clothes factory gives plenty of scope for humour. Better than most comedy series on TV today.

I had heard my parents talking about this classic sit-com so I was thrilled to see the DVD . I have now discovered sit-com gold. Perfectly cast with a feel good atmosphere. I have just ordered the black and white BBC DVD's of the first series.

A massive 14 episodes, and a Xmas special!Itv had high hopes for this series!Features 2 characters from the original show, and a sort of link to Reg Varney,as Anna Karen plays "Olive",Im not sure if she is our Olive from "On the Buses" as her surname is never mentioned in this 1st series, she does have a baby, and I think Olive was pregnant again after Holiday On the Buses, but she was divorced from Arthur at the beginning of Series 5 of "On the Buses"?,enough of the continuity errors(Perhaps she remarried)The show was written by Wolfe and Chesney(Yes on the Buses again)and some of the scripts from the 1960's show were reused, although in the 60's episode "The Sideline" the women were making Gollywogs out of the spare material, not Pandas as in the 70's version. Its a comedy of its time, some of the humour is good fun,but looking at it today,it seems odd that the women would constantly try to get out of doing any work and trying to screw Mr Fenner for every cent,if he went Bust, they would have been out of a job??Perhaps its me trying to put 2011 sensibility onto 1977 working lifestyle. Its worth a look, sometimes ruined by Miriam Karlin's dreadful mugging...
Would appeal to fans of 70's sitcoms, especially if you like "On the Buses"
