5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Shredder,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)This is an excellent shredder. The machine is so much better than the others I have owned.
I claim to be an experienced shredder user - I have had several machines over a good number of years. For me the problems to overcome are blockages when feeding material through (my last shredder, an Alko New Tec 2500R, was dreadful for this), wear on the blades reducing performance, and noise.
In selecting this shredder I took in to account that it was given the thumbs up by Which? in November 2007, and had a very positive write-up on the "fredshed" website, a first-rate source of independent advice. I must endorse what Fred says about keeping the blade sharp:
"Take care with what you put in the shredder and especially do not get ANY soil in it. With the high speed even a small amount of soil acts like an abrasive and quickly blunts the blade."
The machine is the best one I have had. It is well designed and constructed and also very powerful. The blade wears well (if you follow the advice above and also make sure no stones find their way in to the machine) and is a bit cheaper than most brands to replace. It is the quietest machine I have used.....but probably could still annoy the neighbours if run at unsociable hours. The best thing for me is that it is not prone to blocking. If used sensibly, with the help of the wide prodder, you can easily go whole sessions without a blockage.
The collection bag offered as an accessory is not really necessary. A large plastic crate/storage box does just as well in getting the shreddings to the compost heap.
To appreciate this machine you need to have tried some of the others. I recommend it to anyone considering buying a shredder to help control their garden waste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the job well,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)We bought this following a Which? review saying it was the most efficient garden shredder they had tested - we have not been disappointed. In use it has shredded everything we put into it. Branches up to 4cm were sliced into 1mm chips; leaves were chopped into small pieces. With some smaller branches, particularly green ones, the shredder removed the leaves and left a few twigs about 10cm long, although most were chopped into tiny pieces.
It's not particularly noisy when switched on, but with harder and bigger pieces of wood it was noisier, especially when a bit of wood would rattle around inside the machine before it could be shredded. I didn't feel it would be necessary to wear ear defenders for temporary usage, nor loud enough to feel that the neighbours would complain about the noise. Given that it's almost half the price of Bosch's quiet shredder the HP, this machine is very good value. I would recommend wearing thick gardening gloves as it could snatch branches.
Assembling it took about 5 minutes. This was a matter of attaching the wheels and their frame and working out where the supplied allen key is supposed to be stored.
We also bought the partnering storage bag from Amazon. It's a bit like the blue storage bags Ikea sell at their checkout desks, except this one's a lot more expensive but of a similar quality and maybe a bit bigger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says! Another quality product from Bosch,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)I bought this model to replace an old and inefficient shredder.
It runs well and has coped with a lot of shredding, both freshly cut perennials as well as garden waste cut a few months back. Old buddleia stems, ivy, berberis, leylandii branches, brambles and philadelphus branches were all tackled without problems. I was shredding for two hours and only had one blockage. Easy to assemble in 5 minutes. Easy to lift in and out of car. It produces beautifully small clippings which should compost well.
* Wear goggles and ear defenders
* You don't need the bag that can be bought separately, a box, garden bucket, etc will do
* Don't include soil or stones as the blade will blunt, if you pull out brambles, cut off the roots and only shred the topgrowth
- Replacement blades can also be bought at Screwfix, they are original Bosch parts
Don't believe the reviewer that said it would only cope with soft clippings, it takes small branches up to 40mm as advertised. It does not suck them in, you have to help them along and gently push in but it is effortless to use.
Edited October 2011:
I have been extremely happy with my shredder. Over the last few weeks though I noticed that the main switch was becoming temperamental. I contacted Amazon who refered me to Bosch. After contacting Bosch I was advised that my purchase was still under warranty (2 years) and they collected the shredder free of charge. Have rung today for an update and been advised that they will replace the item and a new shredder will be on its way. Fabulous customer service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greedy little Shredder,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)I've never owned or used a shredder before and really didn't know anything about them. I looked at hiring one but you never know what you're going to get and I had 6 large conifers to get rid of. So I started reading reviews to see what other people were buying and to my surprise I ended up at Amazon.
Right, I'll try and get straight to the point.
Q, Is this shredder any good?
A. Yes, brilliant.
Q. Will I need to maintain it?
A. Yes it will need cleaning and it's easy to open to clean it out with a old hand brush. I chose to strip mine down buy removing the metal frame under the cover, just six cross-head screws, and cleaned the whole machine up ready for the next use. This also allowed me to check the blade for any damage and it was fine even after a solid 3+ hours work. I would imagine that you'll only have to do this if you're shredding green stuff as it seems that it gets hot in there and it all gets a bit mushy, if you're shredding wood/branches you shouldn't have any trouble. Remember I was doing Conifers.
Q. Does it jam up?
A. I've only jammed mine once because I put too much in when I first started using it, if this happens to you just hit the red stop button. It will chomp through some quite large branches but best to do one at a time and be warned that it can snatch them from your hand but this can be an advantage because you can give it something to eat and go a pick up the next load while it automatically feeds itself. Watch out for chips piling up under the chute as this will cause it to back up and possibly cause a jam.
Q. Who has the best price for this item?
A. Amazon (July 2010)
Q. Do I need to buy the accessories for this item?
A. No, I use a recycle bin under the shredder to catch the chips and then tip them in to a black refuse sack, job done.
Q. If it was stolen would I buy this shredder again?
A. Without a doubt, I'm very impressed with this greedy little shredder.
Q. Is there anything I don't like about it?
A. Only one problem for me, the gap between the chute at the bottom and the metal tube frame is too small and I can't get my recycle bin under it completely.
Q. Is it noisy?
A. It sounds like a small hover mower until you feed it something but even then it's not bad at all, I have neighbours that can make more noise.
I would strongly suggest that you always use an RCD with any garden power tools and wear cloves, goggles and maybe a dust mask if you're shredding dried branches.
Also you get a two year parts and labour warranty and for this price that's brilliant.
Well done Bosch.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Light Duty...,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 - Electric Shredder
Some quick notes for a purchaser to consider: The instructions are extremely basic with pictures only. Any text is mainly devoted to common sense electrical safety. Build quality is adequate for the job. On lightweight hedge cuttings (and no doubt many other varieties of garden waste) it worked fine. Only small amounts can be put through at a time. The 'resulted trimmings' were small. After about an hours use it started to jam (easy to open and clear) because the blade was blunt already. This is very much the downside of the shredder. It is only suitable for extremely light use with absolute minimal amounts of waste to shred, unless you wish to purchase replacement blades by the dozen. It would have been a good purchase had it not been for this and I would recommend choosing a model which can cope with at least average amounts of shredding before having to purchase any spares or 'consumable items'. This one is a waste of money with an expensive on going running cost.
FOOTNOTE: I telephoned Bosch to comment on the short life of the blade. They insisted the shredder was taken to our nearest dealer who, luckily was just up the road. It was thought a complimentary new blade would be supplied. The dealer was told to return the whole machine back to Bosch. About a week later the dealer rang to say a brand new replacement was ready to collect. This shredder seems identical but it has already shredded over twice the amount of garden waste, some of it a little tougher than previously shredded and the blade is still going strong without all the chips in it as with the first model. Perhaps they have had a batch of faulty blades? Not such a bad purchase after all. There were no charges whatsoever for the replacement shredder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fred the Shred!,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)Well I must admit I was sceptical to say the least. Liked the idea, seen the reviews but still not sure in practice how efficient this would be, it's not something many people have, so they're isn't really a good opportunity to see one in action. Plus who knows if 2200 Watt is enough power, I havn't the foggiest!!! First it's "simples" to assemble and in 5min you're ready to shred! My garden's a mess so thought, well if I have the right tools, I don't mind doing it myself. Plug it in, starts up quickly and is spinning at it's full rev's in about 1/2 second, there's no wait time. Well I chucked everything at it, and believe me this thing chopped ever branch, bunch of leaves into tinny chipped pieces, it was amazing. You might think that with the bigger chunks it would slow down and I guess with time when the blade bluntens a bit, it might, but for now it's didn't even seem to bat an eyelid and I was putting some pretty hefty branches down there. The red plastic tool for shoving down those last bits is essential and works a treat. The best part of this, is I was able to clear a whole section of my garden and didn't feel I have done anything, in terms of effort. It makes a huge difference having one of these and is quick!!! No faffing around with small clippers and bagging it all. Plus the other thing I remember was that the garden bags don't tear, which used to be a real pain, when shoving in those branches, but when it's all chipped into small pieces, you just don't get that. Also some advise, I don't think you need the optional bag underneath to catch the pieces, I have plastic garden sacks with the handles and they are just the right size to wrap over the handles on the side and sit beneath the shredder, plus then you don't have to empty the sack, just remove and tie it up. All in all I can't recommend this enough. Also people talk about noise. I don't know what they're on about, it's hardly noisy, I mean you're doing gardening, you're neighbours will probably be pleased you're sorting
out the mess, and is alot quieter that an lawnmower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bit of kit,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)This is great bit of kit - I'd been meaning to get a garden shredder for years, and after after trolling through various reviews I decided on the Bosch AXT 2200.
Unlike one of the other reviewers, I am not using it to clear a rainforest, just lots of small branches and other cuttings.
What previously would have been a numerous visits to the tip with an estate car filled to the brim with branches, is now reduced to five densly packed rubbish bags.
Why didn't I buy one years ago?

5.0 out of 5 stars third time lucky!,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)This is my third shredder - both the previous ones couldn't cope with anything other than small branches of about 1/2 inch diameter and clogged up with smaller stuff. The second of these was a Bosch, so I was hesitant to go for one again, but on the basis of customer reviews I decided to set aside my earlier bad experience. I was pleased to find they seem to have got it right for this model - it has a very sensible pusher that you use to force loose material down on to the rapidly revolving and very sharp blade and everything from quite large branches to leafy weeds is devoured with ease. Not very noisy either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eats Everything -- updated!,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)In 2008 I said: Nicely made, happily chips everything up to 40mm and anything bigger than that we use on the fire anyway. Rarely jams and not too noisy. Chips are suitable for mulch. (Just seen Argos have it on at £99, drat!) Had it about 4 weeks and it's eaten apple trees, hawthorn, elder and even dried wood -- it looks more robust than most other similarly priced models I looked at.
I've now had it for over 3 years and I've found it to be quite temperamental! It was great to start with and got a lot of use (we've about half an acre). When working it's still good (the blade has lasted well and I'm still using the original one, albeit I have turned it over to use the second side) but by the end of the first year (just outside the guarantee period of course!) it started cutting out after just a few minutes and then stopped working. There are few user-serviceable parts within but the fault seems to be with the microswitch/safety switches and some judicious use of electrical contact cleaner seems to help get it going again for a short while. As it's designed to shred wood, I'm disappointed that after not that long and with proper use it's failed. I'll probably have to get replacement soon and am unsure I want another one like this but most reviews still rate Bosch as the best bet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says it would do!,
This review is from: Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 Blade Shredder (40 mm Cutting Capacity) (DIY & Tools)I bought the Bosch AXT Rapid 2200 electric shredder to get rid of the smaller branches of old fruit trees that we had cut down. It works really well - easy to use, clean and move. I've shredded for at least 6 hours with no problems. Suggest you buy ear defenders if you don't have them. Use goggles too. I've now developed a good system. I gather up the branches in a pile, thick ends towards me and then feed them in one after the other thick end first. You don't need the bag for chippings - a plastic sheet underneath is fine. I'm going to make a chicken wire bin to compost the chippings further for mulch.
I recommended it to my brother-in-law who is equally pleased with his after a weeks use.
