4.0 out of 5 stars Solid joy
Since JM died last Friday I've been revisiting my CD collection, and stumbled across this, which I hadn't listened to for years... and it's a knockout.

All 20 tracks are recorded from one concert at the Shaw Theatre on 13 March 1990, from the walk-on acoustic opening track (`Easy Blues') right through to the encore (a wonderful `One World'), with some of John's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Well played, but the songs don't shine
As a long time John Martyn '70's' fan I'm slowly but steadily delving into his later work and this is one of them. The sound quality is fine and John's singing and playing is excellent as well. His sidemen are fine musicians so all should be well, but I found these recordings not as enjoyable as the earlier live recordings I'm familiar with and it has more than a little...

Since JM died last Friday I've been revisiting my CD collection, and stumbled across this, which I hadn't listened to for years... and it's a knockout.

All 20 tracks are recorded from one concert at the Shaw Theatre on 13 March 1990, from the walk-on acoustic opening track (`Easy Blues') right through to the encore (a wonderful `One World'), with some of John's between-numbers banter (nostalgic rants about the poll tax!). The playlist covers past classics and what was then new material, including four songs from `The Apprentice', all of them top-notch, although the set also includes the disposable `Angeline'. The sound quality is excellent throughout.

The line-up includes Spencer Cozens (keys), Alan Thomson (bass), Dave Lewis (sax) and Miles Bould (percussion)... and a guest appearance from "some freak on the stage" Dave Gilmour, who joins the band for a blistering `John Wayne' which is worth the cover price alone. Apparently he rehearsed with the band for just two hours beforehand.

The album was re-released as `Dirty, Down and Live' in 1999 on the Griffin label, so if you've already got that then save your money. Otherwise, it's an essential addition to the collection.

You might have been a pain to live with, John, and someone to stay clear of when you'd had a few too many, but you were one of the true greats of folk, rock and blues. We're missing you already.

As a long time John Martyn '70's' fan I'm slowly but steadily delving into his later work and this is one of them. The sound quality is fine and John's singing and playing is excellent as well. His sidemen are fine musicians so all should be well, but I found these recordings not as enjoyable as the earlier live recordings I'm familiar with and it has more than a little to do with the arrangements: apart from the start, with John playing solo, the subsequent songs are very akin in texture and feel with a loss of individuality as a result. The ubiquitous presence of the saxophone especially I find somewhat annoying as this instrument generally quite often and certainly on this recording seems to flow over the music like treacle.
As you may have gathered this is not a top notch recording but well worth checking out if you're a seasoned fan.
