4.0 out of 5 stars This is how it should be done!, 29 Aug. 2008

This review is from: Back To Mine: Krafty Kuts (Audio CD)
The 'Back to Mine' concept is very simple, invite a DJ or artist (s) to pick a selection of their favourite records which might, when carefully considered, give the listener a greater understanding and appreciation as to what might have influenced the artist in question.

For this release Krafty Kuts has chosen a very fine selection of 18 records and managed to mix them in to a coherent and remarkably fluid musical tapestry, which includes some acknowledged classics from various musical genres. For fans of Electro-Funk there is a special treat - the mighty Captain Rock track 'Capt Rock to the Future Shock', which rarely, if ever, surfaces on compilations since it's inclusion on Streetsounds 'Electro 5', and this is followed nicely by Paul Harcastle's exceptional 'Rain Forest' and Tyrone Brunson's 'The Smurf'. The quality is continued by Pete Rock and CL Smooth's 'They Reminisce Over You' (T.R.O.Y), certainly one of the best ever Hip Hop tracks, and there are discreet nods to Hip Hop's antecedents with The Incredible Bongo Band's 'In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida' and The Soul Searchers' 'Ashley's Roachslip'.

Seasoned buyers of such compilations will know that a great tracklist does not always guarantee a great mix and listening experience, but here there is no reason to worry. One of the outstanding features of this mix is the fact that Krafty Kuts clearly recognises the value of allowing the tracks 'space', without making recourse to heavy handed editing or over the top displays of his undoubted scratching skills. Some might consider the mixes to lack technical dexterity, but their (often deceptive) understatedness is what best defines this particular cd - it is a carefully considered approach which strongly suggests that Kuts has actually listened to and loved these records, and wants to allow others the chance to do the same.

Furthermore, and this is something that some other compilations suffer from, there is no attempt to be wilfully obscure for the sake of obtaining 'credibility points' (not that this should concern Kuts).

In a market place too often concerned with quantity and not quality this is a standout cd, it doesn't 'shout' and 'scream' for your attention, and for that very reason it is likely to be a cd that you return to over and over again - each time with a smile.

Strongly recommended without hesitation.

This is the first 'Back to Mine' comp i've ever bought. Other releases didnt seem to warrant my attention as much, but knowing Krafty's musical influences and where he's at right now i decided this would be definately worthwhile buying. This compilation is a fusion of all things Hip-Hop and breaks, always staying funky and never becoming self indulgent. For me this kind of album could be used both to get you in the party mood and for post-party chilling
