My daughter has enjoyed playing with this lorry since she was about 6 months old, but around 8/9 months she learnt to use the mallet properly to hit the balls, and after a bit of practice was able to hit them hard enough to pop them down through the holes. Now she is one, and can hit each of them down in turn then retrieve them, put them back in the holes and start over again. I really think it has done wonders for her hand/eye coordination. (She has never bashed her fingers with the wooden mallet in case anyone is worried about that.) The only warning I'd give you is that the holes that the balls need to pop down are lined with rubber and were a bit stiff at first, so that even an adult couldn't very easily hit the balls hard enough to go through. Please do persevere as the rubber loosens up after a bit of use and it is well worth it. My older child (3 years) also loves the lorry and uses it both for hammering and for playing with as a vehicle toy, and transporting other things around in.
