5.0 out of 5 stars A Story to be told
Have watched the the VHS Tape many times, and am moved sometimes to tears.
It is wonderful to see the two fathers(1 a Zulu an 1 and one a white farmer), brought together by a common tragedy.
Have seen the remake, but is NOT a patch on the original b/w film of 1951.
I wouldn't buy it !!

This early version of the book is in black and white which adds to the drama of the storyline. The acting is superbe. Very emotional.

4.0 out of 5 stars The original 1952 black-and-white movie, 29 Nov 2013

As movie-making it is dated, though it certainly retains its power. What makes it well worth watching though is that it was made only four years after the book was written, just after the National Party had come to power and before they had managed to impose Apartheid, so the images are straight from the times and not created in a studio with an historical perspective. Watch this one, watch the later one, and read the book. It remains a great piece of literature as well as an historical insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cry, The Beloved County, 5 Dec 2010
This review is from: Cry The Beloved Country [DVD] (DVD)
I never tire of watching this film. I had it on video and was delighted to find it on DVD. As close to Alan Paton's book as it could possibly be. Well acted by all and thought provoking. A wonderful book and a wonderful film. Could not be bettered even by the more recent remake with James Earl Garner.
