4.0 out of 5 stars Stagey but spellbinding!
I personally found this a spellbinding movie, though I understand why critics would object. The literary origins are retained through the artifice of a structure essential to conceal the twist in the plot. The downside is that the film is somewhat stagey and stylised, though the author conceals shocks brilliantly. You are somehow aware of the artifice throughout, the...

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK adaptation of a brilliant bool
Right, well, as a massive fan of the book, I must admit that I approached this with caution. Fear, to be honest, of how the dreaded Keira Knightley would attack another literary charcter (her 'interpretation' of Lizzie Bennett as a pouting, 'I'll just say my lines fast so they sound witty' skeleton is still a wonder to me).

And it's fine. I think the direction...

2.0 out of 5 stars Depressing Film, 21 Jan 2008

This is the most depressing film I've seen in a long time. I saw it once at the cinema, and never again. Why anyone would want to purchase this dvd, beats me.

Sure, the acting is superb, and the parts were well cast. The soundtrack is also good, but its the story I don't like. It starts off well, but gets more and more depressing as the film goes on, and you'll finish watching the film feeling like you wish you'd never watched it in the first place.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor adaptation of an outstanding novel, 12 Jan 2008

This review is from: Atonement [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
The novel is at least 10 times better!!! Read the book and don't watch the movie.Believe me that only this way you'll get a full appreciation of this MASTERPIECE.
This is what happens when a mediocre director tries to adapt a material which is much above his modest artistic abilities. A great waste!
I just think what a great film it could become in the hands of Kieslowski,Bergman or Truffaut.

I anticipated a really good movie from the reviews I read but I was very disapointed. It looks good-the photography is beautiful but the characters are wooden and the plot confusing. It must have cost a fortune to film the Dunkirk scenes though they were pointless and quite frankly bizarre.
Give it a miss.

I just wanted to let people know that this story just isn't that good. The ending is terrible and self-absorbed. Keira Knightley's accent is ridiculous. Got to love James McAvoy, but it still doesn't go above 1 star.

This movie had me in tears, I've never been so moved by a film before.
The characters, Cecelia, Robbie & Briony, are excellently portrayed by Keira, James and Saoirse. I would definitely recommend to anyone, even if it's not their type of genre. It's a must-see. It's absolutely stunning.

Tremendous hype led me to buy this film for £2 from Tesco... thankfully it was only 2 quid...

We managed 15 minutes before canning it, and now checking the other reviews on amazon have assured me it was the right decision...

Dull, pretentious and indulgent (with another dash of dull...)

This film now joins a very select group of films (now totaling 4) that we didn't watch to the end... for the record the others are Fear and loathing in Las VegasFear and Loathing in Las Vegas [DVD], Moulin Rouge Moulin Rouge [2001] [DVD] and Slacker Slacker [1991] [DVD]...

Spare yourself, you haven't missed anything.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring.., 30 Jan 2008

Atonement had great music and performances but it failed in terms of plot and suspense. It was boring and the reason they gave in order for those two to break up is laughable. I Mean, since when the word of a 13 year old girl counts so much when the victim can not recognise the man who almost...raped her ?
The movie started well but then it was a let down.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute tosh, 27 Aug 2008
This review is from: Atonement [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
This film is boring and badly acted especially by Miss Knighty. The story not clear and missing vital information from the book well not so much missing but not making it clear.

I looked forward to taking my wife to this and wished I had not it was truly truly bad. She like myself had read the book at some time but seriously felt let down.

Would not recommend at all, stay at home with your feet up and watch paint drying its more fun honest!

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not live up to the hype, 16 April 2008
This review is from: Atonement [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
I was very disappointed with this movie. It promised much but delivered little, confusing plot, but very well acted.
Not a film I would watch again.
