5.0 out of 5 stars FAB
Not as consistent as Nightfall but the first 10 seconds possibly one of the best riffs in metal ! Probably the tightest of the classic first 4 lp's. Great band !

3.0 out of 5 stars Epic doom metal pioneers re-issue 1989 fourth album.
Another reissue this month sees Swedish legendary bringers of all things doom, Candlemass, subjecting us to a severe bout of intense, and often very good, no-nonsense metal. Another reissue this month sees Swedish legendary bringers of all things doom, Candlemass, subjecting us to a severe bout of intense, and often very good, no-nonsense metal. Complete with artwork featuring cliché imagery of inverted crucifixes and supernatural figures in the sky, this is exactly what you would expect from a band that almost single-handedly coined the term `epic doom metal'. For the uninitiated, however, whilst the band are very much centered around the doom aesthetic, it's not total bleakness. Then vocalist Messiah Marcolin (duties are now undertaken by Robert Lowe) sounds remarkably like Bruce Dickinson from that little known band Iron Maiden, whilst the guitar work is often uplifting and melodic. This reissue features the customary bonus disc containing interviews, demos and videos, which make this worthwhile, but perhaps only for the completist. After a million and one albums Candlemass are still going strong today and with better production quality it may be worth looking into their later work. But for the old-school character in you, this is a reputable addition to any metal collection.
