Ok, plot wise it is bits of other films stuck together, yes it is ridiculous and no its not of the same "quality" of some of Owen(Croupier), Balucci (Irreversible) and Giamatti (Sideways... ish)'s other stuff...

BUT THAT'S THE POINT =P

If you try and analyse this in the same way you would other films it is awful.

BUT THAT'S THE POINT =P

If you try and analyse this in the same way you would other films it is awful.
The idea of the film is just fun! If you take it seriously you will not enjoy it, and tbh i think that's a good thing.
These days films are too cheesy naturally or are far to pretentious to actually be enjoyed properly anymore.
Not that a little pretentiousness or cheese hurt anyone, but its nice to have a change from people who try too hard and those who dont try at all.
I love analysing films books and anything else that's flung my way but films like this and Crank are just made for a laugh.

Please will people stop saying this is just garbage, because it plainly isn't. Its just not a serious film or an out and out comedy... its just fun =D

I would recommend this to anyone who is capable of watching a film without taking it seriously, and to anyone who enjoyed this I would recommend Crank!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly imaginative and bloodily entertaining slice of gratuitous violence, 21 Nov 2013

Perhaps the least deserving of Clive Owen's uninterrupted run of box-office bombs over the past seven years, Shoot `Em Up is a surprisingly imaginative and bloodily entertaining slice of gratuitous violence that quickly says goodbye to credibility in the first three minutes once our dishevelled hero uses a carrot to dispose of a gun wielding hired killer chasing a pregnant woman before delivering her baby amid a hail of gunfire as an army of hired guns line up to get killed by him with ridiculous ease. Owen's carrot-crunching Mr Smith is the kind of mean and moody man with a past who never misses, never gets hit until the last reel and has a cynical retort for everything as he's pursued by Paul Giametti - Elmer Fudd to his Bugs Bunny - and a large army of disposable goons looking to give a good home to some of his bullets, aided only by Monica Bellucci's lactating hooker who's acting as nursemaid.

Owen seems to have spent half his Hollywood career playing nursemaid in films like Children of Men and King Arthur, but for once he's cast in a part that plays to his limited strengths and doesn't make the kind of emotional demands that have always been beyond him. It helps that his acting has improved over the years, though rather like the similarly wooden Rachel Ward he seems to have finally started getting the whole acting thing right after paying audiences have lost what fleeting interest they had in him. A shame, because he does a nice line in dry humor here as he storms through increasingly outlandish setpieces, a gunfight while having sex and a mid-air shootout with machine-gun firing parachutists among them, all of which are delivered with panache and some originality by writer-director Michael Davis. With the villains comprising of an unholy alliance of the gun lobby and the anti-gun lobby it's a have-your-cake-and-eat-it movie that both revels in its carnage and reminds us that guns are bad, m'kay, but does it with such delirious joie de mort that it seems too over the top to be accused of hypocrisy. Definitely one of the more enjoyable action movies of recent years.

A very decent Bluray extras package includes 9 deleted scenes, 52-minute making of documentary and 22 minutes of animatics plus three railers and director's commentary.

Clive Owen has done some really good films, and this one is up there with them.

As the carrot crunching killer,he is superb, loads of action, and funny at the same time...brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny clever tongue-in-cheek action movie, 9 Nov 2012
This review is from: Shoot 'em Up [DVD] (DVD)
Doesn't take itself too seriously - except Clive Owen, who plays it straight-down-the-line serious, and makes it even more hilarious - especially when he spits out a couple of splendid one-liners.

Paul Giammatti chews the scenery a bit, but the tight editing, great photography and perfectly-balanced script makes this an enjoyable, rip-roaring ninety-minute ride.

As for plot? Hah! Who cares. The scriptwriter/director obviously watched enough Hong Kong action flicks to understand that the bizarre premise and completely unanswered bits are irrelevant for this sort of thing.

Sit back, tune out and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shoot 'em up uncut ?, 25 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just a word of warning. this is NOT an UNCUT version of the film. there is only one version. the film is great. funny and totally over the top and the soundtrack is awesome. (if you like heavy metal). if like me you love this film then the extra cost for the book packaging is worth it simply for being collectable. it is all written in German though. This is Clive Owen on top form and the rest of the cast are excellent in their own right. A directors cut with the out takes re-inserted would be most welcome as the film is only 86 minutes and finishes to soon. i hope this was helpful to you. All the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHOOTING UP THE THINGS WE ALL REALLY HATE, 16 Oct 2010

Did you ever dream being able to run inconsiderate drivers who are too lazy to signal their turns or lane changes off the road and onto the sidewalk? How about spiral-diving amongst a swarm of black-clad enemies and picking them out one by one? How about doing the same while skydiving? Or shooting bullets from your bare hand?

This is an action movie that manages to both make fun of the action genre hyperboles and, at the same time, deliver a string of explosive action sequences. Sure, the plot is not the most deep but it far from paper-thin and, anyway, these are 86min of your life you will be glad you spent having fun.

The gave ...THE HURT LOCKER an Oscar and they passed over this movie!!? SHOOT 'EM UP deserves an Oscar for just two unforgettable scenes: the packaging-line shootout in Mr Smith's lair and the unique shootout/sex ballet. Now, throw in Paul Giammati's smartass one-liners and you have yourself a movie which is great fun to watch.

Giammati may try his hardest to be the usual scene-stealer yet Clive Owen is the one who really delivers this movie. I am sure when they watched this, the producers of the James Bond franchise were kicking themselves for going with Daniel Craig.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

3.0 out of 5 stars mindless entertainment, 16 Jan 2010

An enjoyment of films often depends on an ability called 'suspension of disbelief.' You couldn't suspend it any further than this if you hung it out of an aeroplane. My son suggested that the filmmakers came up with a series of the most implausible gunfights ever, and then tried to find a storyline to join them together.

So if you like mindless violence, implausible plots and testosterone fuelled showdowns, then this one might well be for you.

Picture Quality is very good, with strong features and detail. There is a little grain, but that doesn't detract from the film and adds to the atmosphere. I don't usually bother much about extras, but there is a documentary on how the film was made that is well worth a look. All the extras I looked at appeared to be in HD as well, which is good - many films have the extras in SD.
