Better than the Shame DVD of last year....in fact, better than many stand-up shows available today! Russell effortlessly chats to an enraptured audience about topics as diverse as doing a sex scene in a Hollywood film to having your dad lose it while zipping up your bodywarmer. I was lucky enough to be at the Hackney Empire when this show was filmed and the transfer to DVD has lost none of the intimacy and spontaneity of that night. No comedian is quicker and sharper with comebacks...watching Russell gracefully expose his soul all over the stage instantly renders the (very talented) likes of Peter Kay, Billy Connelly and Eddie Izzard dated. Stand-up comedy has a new benchmark. Forget the tabloid tales, forget the critics who can think of nothing more intelligent to describe him as than "that idiot from Big Brother with the stupid hair"....Doing Life reveals a warm, intelligent and deeply hilarious comic that will be around for many, many years to come.

2nd dvd release from Russell Brand. Takes you on a random journey through what it was like filming Forgetting Sarah Marshall and everything else in between.

contains extras and backstage hijinx. this dvd is definetely not one for the kiddies as it contains alot of sexual references and coarse language

but if you're not offended by any of that then you will have a right laugh

My only real exposure of Russell Brand before this DVD was seeing him in a few films and on television chat shows, but never on the stage performing his comedy. I know that people have very different (often strong) views of this man, but he's very witty, genuinely clever, and a character like no other. He's unique, and you have to give him credit for that.

In this live performance, filmed in 2007 at the Hackney Empire, Russell takes us on a hilarious and down-to-earth journey from his early days as an actor, his father, what it's really like to be unemployed, as well as some behind-the-scenes stories during the filming of the movie 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'. Russell's witty and honest observations hit the laugher button for me, and I guess you could call me a fan now.

The DVD is good value, not only for the main show, but for the excellent extras. There's a 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' TV interview, a behind-the-scenes of the BBC2 music programme 'The Russell Brand Show', 'Backstage at Hackney Empire', and some exclusive sketches. Fans of Russell won't be complaining about 'Doing Life Live'. Contains very strong language and sexual references.

I went to see the 'Doing Life' tour so I was a little hesitant to buy this DVD. However having seen 'Shame' live, buying the DVD and being treated to a gig full of different material I went for it and bought this on the day of release. Thank heavens. This is Russell in his element, commanding the room with such charisma that from the moment he made his entrance I was hooked right until the finish. Plenty of glorious improvisation with only about 25% of the show similar to the one I had seen and even those parts had me laughing.

In my opinion Russell is an aquired taste, but there are anecdotes and one liners that had my mum laughing and she is not exactly what I'd call a fan.

I won't go into detail about the extras but they do not disappoint..
Definitely buy this DVD if you are a fan of Russell or if you are unsure, having recommended it to several friends who hadn't experienced Russell's stand-up and have thanked me for introducing them to him. I've watched this plenty of times since I bought it and it never fails to amuse. The only reason it is 4 stars is because it is simply not long enough!

I did really like this show, but when Russell began to wind up, I was left wondering 'was that it?' I suppose because it wasnt really in any order or had any real structure, it just melted into time, but I would have liked a bit more than an hours worth..

The extras are real gems, featuring Matt Morgan alongside others. Fans of the Radio 6/2 shows will know just how much of a bonus that is!

Russell brand is a man that i find annoying is his overly saturated media work, whether it be the tabloids, radio or tv the man is everywhere, granted he came from a background of drugs and debauchery to work his way to a man that has just got a role in the new st trinians film, this stand up dvd has however educated my brain into thinking that brand is a funny man, certainly for a very adult audience but he knows how to entertain.
The guy has a view on the world that is childish but works,he has an innocence about him that defies the content of his show and again thats a charm that he has mastered, topics are varied and he likes to interject himself with the audience who warm to him like a pot of tea,a good show indeed.

I am a regular listener to Brands radio show as much as for the witticisms of Matt Morgan and the irrepressible Noel Gallagher as his own. Untethered from these more grounded individuals he can become a little wearing...a bit like a more funny 21st century Ben Elton. Ive never seen Russell Brand actually live in the flesh (oh er) but this show seems to differ little from earlier ones (which Ive seen on DVD); ie little in the way of actual solid material and more based on audience adulation and his own fame...which is all a little bit flimsy and embarrassing really, I suspect we will look back in 10 years and wonder what we were laughing at. Much better is the extra material; a couple of brilliant sketches and a 30 minute video of him and Noel Fielding hosting his aforementioned radio show. Basically this is a Chrimbo copout for cynical stocking fillers (my mum bought me mine), so borrow dont buy...theyll be plenty about in the new year.
