This review is from: Eccentric Soul: The Outskirts Of Deep City (Audio CD)
Numero's second volume completes their investigation of Miami's Deep City label and is well up to the standard of the first, Eccentric Soul: the Deep City Label. This is the more obscure side of Deep City's slender output (and that's saying something) but it simply beggars belief that music of this quality was never better known, and in some cases languished on tapes in an attic for 40 years.

As before, Numero should be congratulated on an excellent job on this CD: thoroughly-researched sleevenotes, archive photos, a discography and artists' index make it a comprehensive package. Oh, and if you're wondering about the bizarre cover, it's a photo of Florida A&M University's 'Incomparable 100' marching band, whose members moonlighted in Deep City's supremely soulful house band. As student jobs go, that certainly beats working in a bar !

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb soul music, 3 July 2012

Whether you know any of these tracks or not this is a must have for soul fans, if only for 2 reasons: Betty Wright's blistering "Mr lucky" (recorded when she was FOURTEEN) and Lynn Williams' heart-rending rendition of "Don't be surprised". Those are the standouts for me but the whole thing is superb. Usual excellent Eccentric Soul packaging. But don't be put off if you're not a soul afficionado; this is just pure great music.
