5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, stylish, luminescent Debussy playing, 7 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Debussy: Complete Works for Piano, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
This wonderful release has kept me entertained for the past week since I bought the CD. It is just one way of playing Debussy and I wouldn't want to be without my other recordings. But this is indeed extremely stylish, strong, lovely Debussy playing. There isn't an over-reliance upon the pedal either, which is nice. Bavouzet's technique is well up to the challenge, and if he makes everything sound just a little 'over-technical' it is all in aid of ensuring that the music sings out. As such I wouldn't call this 'cold' playing, although there is an element of that too.

Tempi are definitely on the fast side, the music rushes forwards; perhaps that is what is required in this music, it is early Debussy after all and therefore in danger of sounding just a little like 'salon' music (although I've never understood why that should be a bad thing). This doesn't sound like salon music at all, except in the best sense, in fact I wouldn't mind if it was slightly less styled for the concert platform at times. Bavouzet can, however, 'do' intimacy as he demonstrates beautifully in the opening 'balade.'

The recording sound is utterly fantastic, and well worth buying the disk just to enjoy such amazing clarity. It is on the expensive side but definitely worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly convincing, 4 Feb. 2010

Having accepted that no one interpretation can give you everything, this is a joy from beginning to end. Other reviews has extolled the detail of this recording (both performance and in recording clarity), so I won't add to that. Simply to say that, if this were an old vinyl disc, my copy would already be sounding pretty scratchy. Not one for repeatedly playing recordings in close succession, but this one is persuasive and convincing to the point of being addictive. It has enriched the quality of my musical world.

This disc, very well recorded in 2007, is volume 2 in a series that covers the whole of Debussy's piano output and which has received universal praise from critical opinion plus awards. This particular disc cntres on three major sets plus a number of smaller works covering 14 years of composition from 1890 to 1904.

The three sets are Images oubliees (1894), Estampes (1903)and Pour le Piano (1894-1901). Debussy was fond of writing in groups of three and as his compositions developed they became increasingly abstract in conception. Thus the emphasis is placed more on the sensation of 'being' or 'experiencing' rather than 'observing.'

Bavouzet is perfectly attuned to this conceptual and sound world and these recordings vividly illustrate his pre-eminence in this repertoire as regards modern performers. In addition to sensitive empathy there is also plenty of verve and energy as required and the whole disc makes a very satisfying recital experience.

I would suggest that this disc deserves the most serious consideration from both new and regular collectors. My only proviso is that it might be even more worth while to consider purchasing the boxed set of the complete works.
