5.0 out of 5 stars TIMELESS QUALITY!, 2 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The second instalment of the American series brings back the instrumentation and the "boom chikka boom" approach on the rockabilly songs. The albums has a wider variety of styles than the first album in the series which was a unique acoustic offering.

If I comment on songs 3 through 6 as an example of the added variety:
3 - "Rusty Cage" has rocky edge to it
4 - "The One Rose" is a pure country ballad
5 - "Country Boy" brings back the rockabilly
6 - "Memories Are Made Of This" a Dean Martin pop ballad.

Now the only other artist that I personally know of who could switch between styles as seamlessly as Johnny Cash managed here was Elvis. With Elvis in mind there is a little gospel on this album too.

Like the previous American album there is not a bad song in the collection. American Recordings

One thing I would say here is that one should give a little credit to the record company and producer for supporting albums of this type where Johnny was allowed the freedom to simply perform in his style and to his taste. In doing so there is no notion of ageism, there is no pressure to follow the fashion or trend of the day. The objective was simple to make the purest, quality, timeless music possible.

So in 1996 when this was released, like the first American album before it a Grammy was won.

Buying this album today, I wonder why 1996 I didn't have any knowledge of it.

Again no hesitation in recommending this to anyone and that includes anyone whose music collection may be much more subject to the trends of the day and who might just want to consider something more timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unchained, American Vol 2: Johnny Cash - Cash takes a rowboat to the middle of the sea of heartbreak for another classic results, 15 Aug 2011

Following the success of 1994s American Recordings, I was expecting great things from Cash. And this 1996 release did not disappoint! Always an innovator and a restless soul, he was not content to merely record another carbon copy of his previous success, but to take the ideas further and to build on the foundation laid.

Once again produced by Rick Rubin, and with the same mix of original material, new versions of older material and covers of other artists work, this is a very different sounding album. From the off the tone is more uptempo, with Cash treating us to a series of catchy, foottapping tracks. There is also a backing group now, largely composed of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, who add layers of depth to the music rather than relying of the stark voice and guitar for the emotional punch.

Cash here seems to want to tell us about his youth and adventures. There is a sense of looking back at past glories in the choice of songs and lyrics, but there is also a feeling of looking forward to new pastures. And with the finale, `I've Been Everywhere' (made famous by Hank Snow), Cash gives us a rousing send off, demonstrating he is still full of vigour, amazing us with his verbal dexterity and showing us what use he has made of his lifetime of experience.

Another classic For the Man In Black. His next few records, as he battled illness, the loss of his wife and soon his own passing, were necessarily darker in tone. This is the last time he really seemed to have fun on record. Five stars.

Exactly as the title suggests - Johnny Cash being able to do it his way without being fettered by corporate money driven opinions. This and the sequence of albums which followed include great guitar playing by Cash and many others.

I'm a big Cash fan, this being one of the last recordings he did with Rick Rubin on the American Record label. I wanted to have as part of my music collection work from Cash's early Sun days through Columbia to American. It is high quality as any of Cash's material is and worthy of its place in any collection along with any of the American Records.

This album definitely benefits from the backing of superb musicians in Tom Petty and hi Heartbreakers and the likes of Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood. Johnny Cash sounds fantastic and his heartfelt vocals are awesome.

Excellent CD as part of a set of recordings made just before and after his death - not the usual Cash.

This album is killer. Much more upbeat than I had expected from the second American Recordings installment. Really, at a price like this no Cash fan should be without this album. So, if you're a Cash fan and you don't have this, sort it out!
