While this album will satisfy most ardent fans of "Jr Gong", it's not perhaps the best selection that showcases his talents.
The overall sound I would say comes across as juvenile. This is partly due to the high-pitched and less powerful sound with which Damian delivers his toasting vocals. The backing tracks are a little insubstantial also, which leaves the sound really loose. It also sounds a great deal like most Dancehall Reggae, which is not what the "Jr Gong" really stands for. His later albums have a strong individual mark and really push the genre of Roots Reggae and Dancehall beyond their previous limits. This album is clearly laid within those old boundaries.
A couple of Bob Marley covers brighten up the album as do guest appearances from Stephen Marley, who is almost the ever-present backup to Damian on his albums to date.
Still, songs such as "Love and Unity" and "Old War Chant" have aspects which show how Damian would progress in later albums into the mature, outspoken voice of the people that he has become.

I was not expecting this. I first hear Damien Halfway Tree album then Jamrock now everyone know Welcome to Jamrock is a masterpiece, and Halfway Tree is the obvious blue print for it. So i did have to get this Ist album having got a couple of Mp3s of tracks from it. just the import price put me off a bit, finally got it thoughand man me glad i did. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC in its own right. ok so Damien re worked a couple of his fathers tunes here but hey he got the right and he made an excellent job of it check out the track One more cup of coffe. it has got to be released for the summer dance crowds it just so catchy words and tune you can just see all the girls dancing to this. it is a fun album allthough there are at times very powerfull lyrics to some of the songs it still remains a good time posotive feel fun album. Ragga muffin Mr Marley in the Hall of Fame Buy now
