5.0 out of 5 stars An undoubted classic
There is no doubt that 'Porridge' is a classic sit-com. The humour is timeless and the cast is perfect. At the head of it all is Ronnie Barker who is fantastic as Fletcher and it is, in my opinion, the best thing that he ever did. With marvellous support from Richard Beckinsale, Fulton Mackay, Brian Wilde and countless others this consistantly funny series deserves the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor Description Disappoints
Original BBC disks included the pilot 'Prisoner & Escort' on disk 2. This set doesn't, so assume they're a cheap later release. No mention of this in description. Would have tried to find originals if I'd know, as particularly wanted the pilot episode.

Rest is as one would expect of very popular comedy series by talented actors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything there., 10 May 2011
This review is from: Porridge - The Complete Series Box Set (Series 1, 2, 3 and The Christmas Specials) (DVD)
Great classic comedy.
This boxset has everything that was aired INCLUDING the pilot on Disk 2.
This is a little confusing as it is not listed in it's own right but is included as a special feature.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Time You'll Ever Enjoy "Doing Porridge", 23 Mar 2011
By
This review is from: Porridge - The Complete Series Box Set (Series 1, 2, 3 and The Christmas Specials) (DVD)
Porridge is one of the all time classic sitcoms. Up there with Hancock's Half Hour, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, One Foot In The Grave, Only Fools And Horses and many more.

Ronnie Barker ('The Two Ronnies', 'Open All Hours') heads the cast as the lovable rogue and HMP Slade inmate Norman Stanley Fletcher and it follows his adventures with fellow inmate Lenny Godber (Richard Beckinsale 'Rising Damp', 'The Lovers') and Prison Wardens Mr MacKay (Fulton Mackay 'Doctor At Large', 'Special Branch') and Mr Barrowclough (Brian Wilde 'Last Of The Summer Wine', 'Adventures Of A Taxi Driver')

Fletcher is an habitual criminal from Muswell Hill in London who finally gets caught and sentenced to 5 years "Doing Porridge" as the slang goes. On his first day in Slade He gets paired with a first offender, The young Birmingham born Lenny Godber and throughout the course of the series takes on the role of a father figure and mentor to the naive Godber. It ran for 3 series from 1973 to 77.

The banter between the world weary, grumpy Fletch and the always optimistic Godber caught the public's attention and soon Porridge was a hit, spawning a movie in 1979 and a spin off 'Going Straight' in 1978 set after Fletcher and Godber's release from prison and Fletcher having now to deal with Godber engaged to his daughter Ingrid (Patricia Brake) and trying to keep to the right side of the law. This series is also notable for a teenage Nicholas Lyndhurst playing Fletcher's son Raymond. Lyndhurst would go on with Porridge guest star David Jason to star in the hugely popular 'Only Fools And Horses'

Sadly, 'Going Straight' never got past the first series due to the sudden untimely death in 1979 of Richard Beckinsale from a heart attack at only 31 years old.

Ronnie Barker himself also passed away in 2003 But they will all live on in this wonderful classic DVD Boxset of Porridge.

This boxset was a great buy not only because of the great value, but also the timeless comedy never failed to raise a smile and during my recent exams it proved a good break from revision.

The late great Ronnie Barker's finest work, I think. The comedy is subtle, dry and occasionally poignant. The supporting cast are wonderful and Ronnie was generous and unselfish in giving them just as many punchlines as he had. Like Tony Hancock, he was not afraid of silence as indicated by his pauses, standing in his cell, chewing gum, doing nothing and doing everything; it's impossible to take your eyes from him. The scriptwriters were ahead of their time - the episode with only Ronnie and Richard Beckinsale in a cell having a conversation proves their genius. RIP, Ronnie, Richard, Ron Lacey, Fulton McKay - we'll never see your like again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the "complete" collection, 31 May 2011
This review is from: Porridge - The Complete Series Box Set (Series 1, 2, 3 and The Christmas Specials) (DVD)
An excellent comedy series.

It's a pity this isn't the "complete" collection the box states - it is missing the escape and breaking in episode Porridge - The Movie [DVD] [1979], but together they make it complete - and hours of endless fun.
