4.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable for the price.
This dvd is a good all rounder for enthusiasts and non enthusiasts.

The footage comprises of early/later archive clips with some shots from early preservation & modern traction too. The dvd looks at different aspects of the railways such as signalling, wartime duties, some express locomotives, named trains, branch lines, victorian locomotives, sheds, freight,...

This dvd is a good all rounder for enthusiasts and non enthusiasts.

The footage comprises of early/later archive clips with some shots from early preservation & modern traction too. The dvd looks at different aspects of the railways such as signalling, wartime duties, some express locomotives, named trains, branch lines, victorian locomotives, sheds, freight, Beeching axe, industrial railways, diesel traction, electric traction etc. I will point out some of the archive footage has been used on previous railway programmes (such as the 'British railways' series & the 'glorious steam' box set) but it is nice to watch these gems again.

The archive footage is very interesting with a lot of it to a very good standard, though the sounds are too obviously dubbed over (although this is common with archive dvds on steam locomotives). The preserved footage is okay but some of it seems to lack a tripod, and strangely some of the preserved footage doesn't have the original sounds.

The commentary is informative and clear explaining what is going on in most shots.

The layout of the dvd is very mixed indeed going from one topic (or region of railway) to another very quickly with no apparent order. Personally i prefer a set order on dvds.

Worth having if your interested in railways, however it's not the best DVD but it is definitely not the worst.

this dvd was bought for my husband who is a transport enthusiast especially from transport of the past, he's not interested in anything modern so he found this thoroughly enjoyable and would reccommend it to anybody who is interested in the same pastime.

My father who has alzheimers thoroughly enjoyed watching this DVD with me .
It was great value for the price and we will watch it again.
I bought it after we watched the companion 100 years of buses which really seemed to grab his interest.
I recommend it highly but if you are a dedicated steam enthusiast I do not think you will find anything new in it.

A lot of material arranged in no sort of proper arrangement. The only redeeming feature was an interesting section on industrial railways.

5.0 out of 5 stars A load of nonsense, 2 Mar. 2014

I bought this for my brother's 23rd birthday. We have a tradition of buying each other stupid presents; this year I was considering getting him another gnome, but then I thought I'd get the most boring DVD in the world instead. He really appreciated the gift! He hasn't watched it yet, because - let's face it - it's a DVD about trains. But he did think it was funny, and it will probably be watched sometime when we are inebriated.
