More rubbish from the Disney Channel
on 18 December 2007
This is no Grease (1978) - it never pretended to be and it's barely comparable. It doesn't even fit into the same category- Grease was a cinematographic triumph, this is a "TV film". Grease has a soundtrack that is an artistic achievement. High Street-er, School Musical has a soundtrack with little artistic merit. The lines are quite bad - not just unoriginal, and often repeat the same themes. Some don't even make good sense: "Don't mess with the flow, no no"? [From the first TV film]. It just looks silly after a while. People only like it only because it is sung by kids.
Disney do not have the guts to release this work as a piece of cinematography. Not without testing it on TV first, and marketing the franchise ten fold. For those reasons, High School musical is a wimp.
Not only that, it is a joke. In this DVD, we see lots of amateurish actors rising up to mime the worst songs with the most pretentious, "Yeh, yeh yehhhhh!", and hands on heart. Walt Disney should be turning in his grave. Remember the high quality of films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and the distinction set by Beauty and the Beast (1993) - as recognised by the National Film Registry. Why on earth should we settle for any less quality? This is a "family TV movie for kids dreaming to be stars" - not a true "family movie" in the same way as "Jurassic Park", or "Matilda".
Nothing wrong with a bit of fun, you might say. Yes, nothing wrong with that - but it is really only "a bit" of fun. If you buy it now, the DVD won't last 2-3 years before it goes missing or the kids sell it on ebay. It's a waste of money.
To conclude, it is quite an apalling TV film. And, no, it does not fill in the gaps left in kids TV by Saved by the Bell (1989), Prince of Bell Air (1990) and Keenan and Kel (1996). It is a mutation of various other things done in the past.
