Gil Shaham is a marvellous violinist, technically magnificent and highly musical - and interesting too! It's nice that he's recorded the very lovable 'Butterfly Lovers' Concerto, that very popular, highly melodious and sumptuous (if naive and repetitive - but in an oddly appealing way) work written in 1958 in Shanghai, and it could hardly have a better advocate. Shaham copes excellently with the erhu-imitating portamento style of the tunes and is completely in command in the more rapid, vibrant, rhythmic episodes. More familiar territory - the Tchaikovsky - is just as good, and this is a very exciting and musical version. He's well partnered and the recording is good. Highly recommended.
